It looks like Dan has finally got what it takes to be a professional.

To be a pro, you have to be a pro every day. He's learnt that and the Davis Cup has helped that, being around Andy Murray and other top players.

It's showed he can stay alongside these players. Now he's got in the top 50, he needs to keep pushing for the top 30, the top 20.

Dan Evans wanders off court, red holdall slung over his left shoulder, mobile phone clutched in his right hand. He's probably checking his social media accounts. Plenty of positive feedback on the notifications page, one would assume. Either that or he is checking the Championship football result.

  3. Evans did his homeworkpublished at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2017

A terrific performance from Evans. He demolished his opponent. It was so solid. He made it look easy on a fast court. It was a professional performance.

When he needed to he got the ball back in play, he used his backhand slice when necessary. He did his homework. With the pressure of being number one, he had everything to lose. He came through extremely well.

Justin: Great start for GB! Evans is looking like the Top 50 player that he is and more!

Jonathan Lansana: What a great match Dan Evans just produced there. Solid start for GB.

Here's how Dan Evans won by numbers. Pay particular attention to the 'Unforced Errors' tally.

Shapovalov's got weapons in his game but you need more than that. He needs to learn how to harness the power. He'll get tournament-tough and he'll learn when to go for the big shots. You can't go for a winner on every ball. You have to earn your points.

There's glimpses of potential, there's no doubt. He's one for the future.

Denis Shapovalov takes a good gulp of water as he contemplates what might have been in his first 'live' Davis Cup match.

While he showed lots of superb shot-making, there were a lot of sloppy errors that are likely to be wiped out by experience. Definitely a name to remember.

Dan Evans wanders off court, little sign of a smile despite producing a wonderful performance. Always looks a bit glum does Dan. Suppose that's what years of following Aston Villa does to a man.

Quality. Dan Evans demolishes Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov to give Great Britain the perfect start in Ottawa.

Evo quickly racks up three match points and although Shapovalov saves one, he is swatted away in the next point. The 17-year-old crashes a forehand into the net, Dan Evans rejoices. High fives and back slaps all round.

    Great Britain are ahead!

Evans has played superbly. He's got the balance right - attacking at the right times and defending immaculately.

His training and fitness comes in when he can take off quickly and accelerate. That was a great game for him.

"Come on!" shouts Dan Evans. I think he is pleased. Evans pushes Shapovalov deeper and deeper at 15-15, the Canadian slipping and sliding and eventually shanking wide.  Shapovalov responds to level at 30-30, only to plant a rushed backhand into the net. Then he loses the break point when Evans drags him all over the court before reading a volley and smacking a forehand down the line to safety.

Dan Evans has not let his serve slip in this match - now would not be a good time to do it. He doesn't. Another quick hold to love - Evo has only dropped two points on his serve in this third set - ends when he wins a game of volleys at the net.

Shapovalov is now at the business end of a set for the first time. He can string winners together, so Evans has to play a solid service game here.

Dan Evans might be hankering after that break, but Denis Shapovalov is determined to keep it out of sight. A solid service game from the young Canadian leaves Evans chasing his tail again, Shapovalov sealing the hold with a deft net volley.

Dan Evans mutters to himself as he slips 0-15 behind, demanding a particular ball off the nearest girl before focusing on the job ahead. He goes aggressive, forcing Shapovalov back and into an error for 15-15. That gives Evo more ammo and he wraps up the hold by rattling a couple of quick, well-constructed points.

Evans didn't do too much wrong there. I'm sure he's thinking the break is going to come, he just needs to take care of his side of the court.

It's dangerous coming up against with someone with nothing to lose, on one of the quickest courts I've seen in years.

Shapovalov has got bags of talent. Of that there is little doubt. But the 17-year-old is still raw and far too erratic to be challenging the big boys yet. He commits two whoppers to hand Evo a 0-30 lead on a plate, before pushing a button and going all nuclear on the Brit.

An arsenal of aces and ferocious forehands turns 0-30 into 40-30, briefly interrupted by an Evans winner, before sealing the hold with another ace.
