    *Djokovic 6-3 6-4 4-1 Granollers

A lovely swiping backhand volley from the world number two sends Granollers into a spin. He's 0-30 down.

The Spaniard claws back a point. And then another.

But Djokovic earns a break point, thanks to his lightning-quick reactions across court.

And the break is his - after lofting the ball over the net from close range.

Andre Agassi is looking cool and calm watching Novak. Novak is getting pumped up, he wants to find his best form, build confidence and keep his momentum going. He'll be excited having a new coach in his corner as well.

  3. Nadal breakspublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    *Nadal 6-1 5-4 Paire

Classic Nadal. He had to battle to hold his own serve in the last game and now he breaks his opponent in the follow game. Not the smartest few points from Paire - again playing a couple too many drop shots - but Rafa will serve for a two-set lead.

    Djokovic 6-3 6-4 2-1 Granollers*

Djokovic saves another break point and takes the advantage after deuce.

    "Come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn," he screeches.

He better save his lungs. Granollers has just stuck a lovely forehand winner past him.

    Back to deuce again.

  6. Rafa holdspublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Nadal 6-1 4-4 Paire*

He had to save two break points in that game but Nadal holds. 4-4.

The pair meet at the net and exchange blows (not punches, I might add). Djokovic comes out on top.

Granollers then makes a sublime return from the Serb's massive serve. 30-15.

Then...an incredible get! Granollers runs on to the end of a Djokovic chip over and some how manages to return it while maneuvering his body around the net post. The pair high five, it was that good.

And now the Spaniard has break point. Not again, surely?

Nope, not just yet, Granollers' shot ends up just past the baseline. Duece time...

  8. Nadal saves break pointpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    *Nadal 6-1 3-4 Paire

Brilliant volleying from Nadal. Break point saved.

    Hello?

With the help of a net cord, a mis-hit and a Rafa double fault Benoit Paire has a break point on the Nadal serve. He can't take the first but here comes another opportunity...

  10. A third successive break...published at 14:01 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    *Djokovic 6-3 6-4 2-1 Granollers

At 30-30, Djokovic attempts to lob his opponent and Granollers wafts his racquet, as if to try and usher the shot over the chalk. It works! It goes out. Granollers raises a wry smile.

Djokovic continues to push, though, and we go to deuce. Twice.

On the second one, Granollers messes it up. He thinks Djokovic's return is going long, but it's not. Break point to the Serb.

And the defending champions takes it. Three consecutive breaks of serve to start this set. Told you it was an odd match.

You don't win 14 Grand Slam titles without being able to manage a tasty spell from your opponent every now and again. That is what Nadal has done here, holding comfortably to restore some normality.

I said earlier the Spaniard had only lost twice at Ronald Garros in 74 matches. Of course that does not include his withdrawal from his third round match with Marcel Granollers - who Novak Djokovic is currently in battle with over on Chatrier - last year due to injury. Nadal will be looking to go much further this year.

Paire also manages to hold his next service game. On we go.

  12. Granollers breaks backpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Djokovic 6-3 6-4 1-1 Granollers*

This is such a weird match. Djokovic holds to love and then goes 0-30 down on his own serve.

The world number two recovers to 30-30, but then sticks an overarm slam into the base of the net. Break point Granollers.

A raucous baseline rally between the pair, with grunts and screams and sweat and slides, ends with Djokovic hitting long!

    The Spaniard breaks back instantly.

  13. Nadal breaks backpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    *Nadal 6-1 2-3 Paire

You're playing well Benoit but that is a little ambitious. He goes for a third drop shot in the game but the ball doesn't make it over the net.

That brings up a couple of break back points for Nadal. Paire goes long with a backhand and we're back on serve again in this topsy turvy set.

  14. Djokovic breakspublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    *Djokovic 6-3 6-4 1-0 Granollers

    Deja vu, much?

For the third time, Djokovic breaks at the start of a set.

And he does it to love. Brutal.

It didn't need much to get the crowd going, and Paire has done his bit with a mini comeback in this second set, along with some feisty fist-pumping. The collective "Ouiiiiiii!!!" that follows any Paire winner is enough to rattle the flag poles. Nadal has helped him out with a few loose forehands and his customary glare, and will want to avoid getting drawn into a Lenglen classic.

  16. Paire breaks Nadalpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Nadal 6-1 1-3 Paire*

Rafa, not impressed with losing the previous game, goes after the Paire serve but the Frenchman fights off a couple of break points to hold.

A few errors are starting to come from the Nadal racquet. Remarkable. Two break points for Paire in the following game. And he takes the first of them. What a turn around.

That was a positive burst of energy from Djokovic at the end of the set. When it comes to the crunch moments that's what he's good at, grinding, grinding and grinding, and winning the big points. He got it together in the end.

  18. Game and second setpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Djokovic 6-3 6-4 Granollers

Granollers is being made to shuttle run across the back of the court, and is eventually undone by a brilliant down-the-line backhand from Djokovic.

As he moves to set point number 9 (nine), the Serb lets out a huge roar.

Surely he's got to do it this time?

    Bingo. Second set Djokovic.

I'm not really sure how, but Marcel Granollers has saved EIGHT break points to hold.

Djokovic is going to try and serve for the set now.

I'm laughing at Djokovic's demeanour. He threw his arms into the air as if to say 'here we go again' as this game goes on and on.
