It is very important for Muguruza to get the good early start and build some confidence.

She is showing sharp form right from the beginning, that is a great sign for her.

  2. Muguruza breaks in first gamepublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

What a brilliant start from the defending champion.

A brutal backhand winner at the net brings Garbine Muguruza three break points.

And she takes the first game and first break with the same move.

British number three Aljaz Bedene comes into this match in decent form on his favourite surface.

He has won two titles on clay this year - both on the second-tier challenger circuit - and reached the final of the ATP Tour event in Hungary.

Defeat to Lucas Pouille brought to an end a 16-match winning run for the Slovenian-born Briton which played a big part in him climbing from outside the world's top 100 in March to his current position of 52.

His opponent Ryan Harrison is ranked 42nd. Should be tight.

The last time Garbine Muguruza played at Roland Garros, this happened...

    Trust me, she was elated.

Muguruza pulled off a shock win against Serena Williams in the 2016 final to lift her first Grand Slam trophy.

The 23-year-old Spaniard hasn't quite been able to match that success since, after going out early at Wimbledon and the US Open and in the quarters in Australia this year.

Today, she opens the defence of her title against Francesca Schiavone, the 36-year-old world number 78 who won the French Open in 2010.

  7. Kiki the cover starpublished at 10:03 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

There are some big names in action today but none carry the burden of expectation that currently weighs down on Kristina 'Kiki' Mladenovic. The world number 14 is the big French hope, and she beats the likes of Nadal, Djokovic and Muguruza as cover star for today's programme. 'Kristina Mladenovic - l'ambitieuse' reads the headline. No pressure.
