Once again, Murray fends off the danger of a break to hold.

    He needed that.

    Williams 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 Mertens

    Yes, yes she can!

The first and second match points for Venus Williams go skew-whiff, Williams tightening up a little and lashing wide, but she snaffles the third with an emphatic slap over the net!

That was a corker of a match, and credit to Elise Mertens for putting in such a fiery performance on her Wimbledon debut, but it's Williams through to the second round on her 20th appearance at SW19.

    Murray 6-1 6-4 2-1 Bublik*

Murray hits a forehand long to gift the first point of his service game to Bublik.

And then the Kazakh throws down an overhead smash for 0-30. Nicely done.

Murray pulls out an ace and Bublik lofts a drop shot wide to make it 30-30.

Oooh, Murray hit into the net to make it break point Bublik.

But another poor forehand drop shot from the world number 135 brings the score to deuce.

And Elise Mertens ensures Venus Williams will have to wait a little bit longer - first a forehand winner, then a fizzing ace down the T.

    Can Williams serve it out?

    *Murray 6-1 6-4 2-1 Bublik

Alexander Bulik gets us back in play and takes a quick 40-0 lead.

But those unforced errors are back.

The 20-year-old throws away two points before landing his 11th ace to hold.

And we're about to get going again on Court One, where it's deuce, and Venus Wlliams is a game away from winning. Bet she loved that rain delay...

    Murray 6-1 6-4 2-0 Bublik

The scoreline is pretty conclusive but a look at the statistics tells you why Murray is so much in control of this match. Bublik might be trying to get the crowd on side but they can't do much to help when he's hitting 10 aces, but 11 doubles-faults, and 26 errors to just seven from Murray.

The Briton's second serve is generally seen as an area to attack, but so far he's winning 74% of the points when he misses his first serve.

  8. Postpublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    Murray 6-1 6-4 2-0 Bublik*

Right, what's the score? Ah, yes. Murray leads 6-1 6-4 2-0.

Let's get back under way, shall we?

I like the potential in Bublik. I like his personality, he's not afraid, he's a showman. He plays to the crowd and talks to his opponent. Sometimes he chooses the wrong shot at the wrong time, but that will come with experience.

Some more from Nick Kyrgios, on why he didn't contemplate opting out of Wimbledon before his first round match, despite that nasty fall at Queen's.

"I spoke to the doctor before the tournament and he leaned towards not playing. But Wimbledon is my favourite tournament and it was not easy to pull out," he said.

"I thought I could win. Some opponents I probably still could have won against but not Pierre. I'm not taking anything away from him.

"Surgery? I don't know at the moment. I'm not a doctor."

  14. Centre Court uncovered - for nowpublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

The Voice of Wimbledon speaks: "This intermittent light rain is expected to continue for the next half an hour. We will continue to update you with further developments."

That brings a discontented murmur from the Centre Court crowd, possibly along the lines of 'Where is the roof?'

With the forecast apparently decent for the rest of the day, and this match going through quickly so far, there is no great time pressure, and organisers would much rather play the matches uncovered.

Once the roof is over, it must stay there for the conclusion of that match. They might hope to avoid that being the case should Petra Kvitova v Johanna Larsson start soon.

    Robson 4-6 2-6 Haddad Maia

Britain's Laura Robson after her first-round exit: "I didn't feel like I played at the level I can and it wasn't the way I've been playing in the last few weeks.

"I feel I let myself down a bit and didn't get into the match. I tried to play too perfect when I didn't need to go for so much.

"I thought I had a good chance with way I had been playing, there was no reason why I couldn't have won that match.

"She didn't have to do a lot, I gave her all the chances she wanted."

Kyrgios 3-6 4-6 retired hurt Herbert

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios appears to be sulky at the best of times, so you can imagine his demeanour after limping into Wimbledon's main interview room.

The Aussie was predictably downbeat as he discussed retiring from his opening match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert with that long-standing hip injury.

Kyrgios said at the weekend he was only "about 65%" fit after aggravating the problem at Queen's, but insisted it was not a career-threatening problem.

"I did everything I could to help it. I did not have enough time," he said.
