    Murray 6-1 5-4 Bublik*

The net gives Bublik a bit of help as he snatches the first point from Andy Murray's serve.

    And then it's 0-30.

    A fierce forehand cross-court makes it 0-40.

Three break points to Bublik. Blimey.

  2. Quiet up on Murray Moundpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

Dare I say the atmosphere is a bit flat on Murray Mound? The waterfall feature that gurgles away down one side of the hill is making more noise than the spectators assembled on it, probably because the match on the big screen featuring the defending champion is so one-sided too. I'm sure Andy Murray won't be too bothered if it stays that way though.

  3. Williams breaks straight backpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    *Williams 7-6 (9-7) 1-2 Mertens

And Venus Williams ups the ante, putting her frustration at being broken into challenging Elise Mertens' service game, and she breaks straight back.

    *Murray 6-1 5-4 Bublik

Andy Murray returns into the net and Bublik moves to 30-15.

Make that 40-15, actually, as the 20-year-old fires a backhand into the corner.

The world number one can only find the net again and Bublik holds. Murray will now serve for the second set.

  6. Mertens gets early break against Williamspublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    Williams 7-6 (9-7) 0-2 Mertens*

Elise Mertens hasn't let that intensity slip in the slightest.

She's pushing Venus Williams all the way, forcing the American to chuck in some extra energy into every shot, and she's got the first break of the second set as a Williams forehand ends up in the foot of the net.

This first-round match is proving to be a picnic for Andy Murray so far, and it's the same for the crowd watching the big-screen on Murray Mound, where it is more about cheese sandwiches than cheering at present - I think many people here have stopped getting excited every time Bublik is broken, understandably, and are concentrating on polishing off what is left of their lunch instead.

    *Murray 6-1 4-3 Bublik

Bublik is much more settled now, and saunters through a fairly easy service game.

Can the world number 135 find a break next?

He seems up for it, certainly. After a short drinks break he's back on his feet and asking for cheers from the crowd.

Game, set and match - Janowiczpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    Shapovalov 4-6 6-3 3-6 6-7 (2-7) Janowicz

Jerzy Janowicz finally wears down the resolve of 18-year-old Denis Shapovalov to win in four sets.

Fittingly, the 2013 semi-finalist seals victory with a serving onslaught in the fourth set tie-break to overwhelm the Canadian.

The Pole could face 14th seed Lucas Pouille in round two - the Frenchman has just got under way against Tunisia's Malek Jaziri.

  11. 'A remarkable piece of execution'published at 14:11 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

Thirty-first seed Fernando Verdasco has taken the first set against Kevin Anderson on court 18 - Anderson's not an easy man to lob, but the Spaniard pulled off this brilliant shot early in the second set.

    Murray 6-1 4-2 Bublik*

It feels almost comforting to see Murray send home a sensational cross-court winner and then reward himself with a fist pump. Classic Andy.

The top seed fires down his first ace of the match to move to 40-15 but Alexander Bublik makes the world number one scamper to the net, and Murray sends his rushed response past the chalk.

And then Bublik goes cross-court to bring the score to deuce.

There's no panic from Murray, though. His serve does the job and he he holds to move 4-2 up.

    Williams 7-6 (9-7) Mertens

Fifth set point for Venus Williams - and she's taken it! She get a smile and a nod off mum Oracene, watching from the box, as Elise Mertens slices a backhand into the net.

Mertens has her hands on her knees, head bowed, a deep breath before she heads off for a sit down. She needs to keep her composure and keep this tempo going.

If I was Bublik's coach, I would go absolutely mad - I'd tell him that for every forehand drop shot you pay me 10 euros extra. This is an impossible shot.

    *Murray 6-1 3-2 Bublik

After a fourth deuce, Bublik has the advantage and he sends down a storming ace to hold.

The Wimbledon debutant has got the usually partisan crowd in the palm of his hand now. And he's loving it.

    *Murray 6-1 3-1 Bublik

Can Bublik hold again? He's looking good at 40-15.

But he clocks up yet another double fault and then looks to have sent a backhand just out. He's challenging the call...and it was just out. Bublik goes down on one knee and looks like he's about to cry. He has a giggle instead.

Bublik slams down an ace to hold the advantage after deuce. But guess what...another double fault brings us back to 40-40.

A forehand slice drop shot goes really wrong and Murray has a break point.

The crowd are getting behind the 20-year-old now and cheer as he saves the break point.

  20. Williams and Mertens into tie-breakpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    Mertens 6-6 (7-7) Williams*

Venus Williams and Elise Mertens are timing the pants off some of these shots on Court One.

Unsurprisingly, given how close this first set has been, we've been into tie-break territory. Williams was on top, Mertens saved two set points with some fine forehands down the line, and then brought it to 6-6 with a lovely backhand!

When these two met at the French Open, Mertens won just four games. Now she's got Williams looking a tad unsettled...
