Venus Williams broke down in tears as she was questioned by reporters about a Florida car crash in which a man died.

Williams could face a wrongful death lawsuit from the family of the man, after she was accused by police of being at fault for the collision.

The 37-year-old spoke after a 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 win over Elise Mertens in the first round at Wimbledon.

On the crash, Williams said: "There are no words to describe how devastating [it is]. I'm completely speechless."

  6. 'I am very happy to be back'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

Rafael Nadal speaking on BBC One after his win over John Millman: "I don't know how well I played but the important thing is that I am through. It's been a positive start and I am happy with how I finished the match, hitting with the forehand.

"For all the players it is so special to play here and for me, after the history I have here, the five finals in a row, I am very happy to be back. Thanks to the fans for the support.

"I have been playing good tennis since the beginning of the season. The clay-court season has been special and emotional and here I have an opportunity to perform on grass."

The weather forecast looks encouraging for the opening days at least, so hopefully the Centre Court roof will not be required, but work is well under way to provide a second show court shelter.

Court One will be more open to the elements than usual this year and next after work began over the winter to install a second roof by the time of the 2019 championships. That will mean that of the 39,000 spectators on site at any time, 26,000 on Centre Court and Court one will be guaranteed tennis.

Rafael Nadal and John Millman pat each other on the back and walk off court together, before Nadal stops for autograph duty. He's got a huge, Cheshire cat grin on his face.

Up next on Court One, it's British number one Johanna Konta against Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan.

    And there we go!

It's taken Rafael Nadal just one hour and 45 minutes to smash his way into the second round. He throws his sweatbands into the crowds, which gets a huge cheer, then pretends to do the same with his shirt, before grinning and sticking it in his bag.

That's an emphatic first game on grass for the fourth seed.

  11. 'My dream came true' - Kvitovapublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

Petra Kvitova is playing only her third tournament since being stabbed by an intruder at her home in December.

Speaking to BBC Sport after victory over Johanna Larsson, she said:"It was amazing to step out on Centre Court again, it was amazing to be back here and playing on this beautiful court - my favourite court.

"It was my motivation to come back and play at Wimbledon and I'm happy that my dream came true.

"I'm still missing matches - it's training you can't get through training alone. You just need to play as many matches as you can.

"I was tight and nervous today and started badly with my serve so need to improve that and my ground strokes.

"I feel now pain [from her recent abdominal injury] but missed a few days of practice. I hope with more matches I will be better and better."

    Nadal 6-1 6-3 5-2 Millman

A stinging forehand from Nadal, spinning and fizzing off the surface, has Millman stretching and getting nowhere near it. And again!

That gives the Spaniard three match points.

  13. Svitolina avoids upsetpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

Australian Ashleigh Barty has been in fine form on grass but couldn't upset fourth seed Elina Svitolina on court three earlier today.

There's a fella in the crowd with his cap on sidewards. Think Will Smith in Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It's a strong look.

John Millman takes advantage of a sloppy service game from Rafael NAdal, but the Spaniard is just a game away from a place in the second round.

    Karlovic 7-6 (7-5) 1-1 Bedene

    Chris Bevan
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

There was a mass exodus from court three after Ivo Karlovic took that first set tie-break but Slovenian-British tennis fans should not be disheartened because Aljaz Bedene has never lost to the giant Croatian in three previous meetings, and is still yet to even drop his serve against him even after losing that first set.

    *Nadal 6-1 6-3 3-0 Millman

Again, John Millman comes charging in and again, all he can do is flick the ball into the foot of the net.

A big serve foxes Nadal, another loopy return going skywards, but Millman squanders his advantage as a backhand drifts just wide. That's all the encouragement Rafa needs to blast through his defences and extend his lead.
