    Williams 3-6 3-6 Kerber

"I am just me, and that's all I can be. To all the mums out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried but Angelique played really well, she played out of her mind. I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best.

  8. Kerber and Williams pick up their silverwarepublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

Williams raises a smile as she collects the runners-up plate.

It has been a extraordinary comeback for the American veteran who recently returned from having given birth to her first child, coupled with the health complications that came with it.

And then comes the champion - Angelique Kerber.

A beaming smile after what has been a truly brilliant Wimbledon for the 30-year-old.

A lot to be proud of for Serena Williams, to put herself in this position.

    Anti-climax?

    Damp squib?

Or should we just doff our hats to Angelique Kerber for having an answer to everything Williams threw at her?

    Kerber serves.

Williams then has to stretch and finds the net.

    The story of her match.

    No fairytale for Williams.

But a deserved and magnificent effort from Kerber.

Probably Williams' best shot on the match - a delicate sliced drop at the net that even Kerber cannot pick up.

    30-15.

    Faint hope for Williams.

An excellent return brings up 30-30.

If there is one player in the world that won't go down without a fight, it's Williams.

15-0 is followed by 30-0 courtesy of an ace.

    She eventually holds to love.

Now arguably the greatest must break.

    Sonia Oxley
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Williams had a real "What can i do?" exasperated shrug to herself at the end of that game.

And that is an answer she will need to find very fast.

  20. Kerber a game awaypublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    *Williams 3-6 2-5 Kerber

A relatively simple hold for Kerber as Williams comes to the net but fires her backhand long.

The American looks up to her team.

If she is going to mount a fightback, now would be a good time.
