  1. 'Success is not winning Wimbledon'published at 16:12 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams v Kerber

Serena Williams on facing Angelique Kerber:

"When I walked out against Kerber in 2016, she was a person I was so determined to beat, She beat me at the Australian Open final and I had had enough of losing.

"I’m still just as determined but it is different. I am back where I feel I belong, so early, only fourth tournament so it is a different feeling.

"I’ve had to do a ton of fitness to get back close to where I was, and I’m still not there. But it’s fun it is like climbing a mountain. I was on top of the mountain now I’m climbing it again. I play tennis to be the best and that’s all I want to do.

"I‘ve always wanted to be the best person for kids, now I have my own daughter, ever decision I make is to make sure she has the confidence as a woman and human and is growing

"Success is not Wimbledon or anything to do with tennis. Just making sure Olymipia is the happiest and healthiest she can be."

  3. 'Kerber is like a slinky'published at 16:11 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams v Kerber

    Tracy Austin
Two-time Grand Slam champion on BBC TV

I think it's more important for Kerber to get a quick start. Serena can steamroll opponents and take the racquet out of people's hands.

We know Kerber can absorb power so well, she's like a slinky. She absorbs everything.

Angelique Kerber's form in 2016 saw her end Serena Williams' 186-week stint as world number one, but it went downhill from there for the German.

In 2017 she failed to win a tournament, failed to get past the fourth round at a Grand Slam and slipped outside the top 20.

But, after pairing up with coach Wim Fissette, she says Williams is not the only one making a comeback.

"I think it is a completely new match," Kerber said. "We both learned a lot. She's coming back. For me also, I'm coming back from 2017.

"It will be a new match. I know that I have to play my best, best tennis to beat her, especially on the grass, on the Centre Court, where she won so many titles here.

"I'm looking forward to playing against her. It's always an honour to be playing against her.

"Serena is one of the best players in the world. We had so many great matches in the last few years. To see her back, it's great."

  5. 'Pressure on Kerber's serve'published at 16:08 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams v Kerber

    Chris Evert
18-time Grand Slam singles champion on BBC TV

There’s going to be more pressure of Kerber’s serve. Serena will be all over that, it will be target practice on the second serve. That’s Serena’s game, so she will get a lot of them in.

  9. Serena - the statspublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams v Kerber

She's chasing down Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slams, but here are a few other Serena stats:

    • Williams' 14-month hiatus from the game while she was pregnant and recovering from a traumatic birth meant that she went tumbling down the rankings. Her current position of 181st sees her become the lowest-ranked Wimbledon finalist ever.
    • No woman as low as her 25th seeding has ever played in the SW19 showpiece. If she wins she will become just the fourth player to lift the title when seeded outside the top 10.
    • Williams is already the oldest Wimbledon winner. She has won 10 majors since turning 30 and is also the oldest women to ever top the WTA rankings.

    Williams v Kerber

    Martina Navratilova
Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

Great contrast in style between Serena and Kerber, and a lefty and right to boot. Serena has the best serve ever and Kerber the best defender.

It is power versus speed, defence versus offence and I normally go with offence, especially on grass.

With all due respect to the two we've just seen, this is the main course. Thanks for the warm-up though.

Hello. Saj Chowdhury here, inside the Wimbledon grounds awaiting what promises to be a cracker.

Ignore the seedings (11 and 25) these two have been at this stage before, with one of duo having been in more major finals than the WTA top 20 have managed in total.

They've faced each other twice in Grand Slams finals - it's 1-1, with Williams having got the better the last time they met, at Wimbledon in 2016.

Will German Kerber manage to upset the odds?

Or will tennis' supermum complete a remarkable fairytale return to the sport?

    Stay tuned.

Epic match. It doesn't get better, these two elevate each other. The one man enjoying this very much is Kevin Anderson.

The different was a point or two. They were equaling each other in winners and made points, it was tantalising.

Ultimately the difference was Djokovic needed that match more. He's been gone for two years and needed that match to make this year important.

  15. 'Incredible to be in the final'published at 15:43 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Nadal 4-6 6-3 6-7 (9-11) 6-3 8-10 Djokovic

Asked if he slept well after finishing at 23:00 BST last night, Djokovic added: "If you can call it sleep! When you finish at 11pm and you have to come back to the practice court for 10.30am...

"The adrenaline, it's not easy to relax and calm down. It was a late night, early morning. I am so glad to overcome this challenge."

And on facing Kevin Anderson in the final: "Hopefully we can both play! It's been a roller-coaster for him in the last couple of rounds, but he had a day off and that means a lot. I wish I had one.

"It's incredible for me to be in the Wimbledon final, I am trying to digest that first."

    Nadal 4-6 6-3 6-7 (9-11) 6-3 8-10 Djokovic

And here is an emotional Novak Djokovic: "It's hard to pick the words, I am just going through things that flash back - the last 15 months, everything I have been through to get here, to win against the best player in the world in one of the longest matches I ever played. I am overwhelmed.

"It's very special. It really could have gone either way. It was clear very few things separated the two players. Until the last shot I didn't know if I was going to win. I believed it, but he was very close. These kind of matches you live for and work for."

"When Novak locks in and starts hitting that ball so consistently, so flat, it is very difficult for a guy, even as good as Rafael Nadal, to throw some spanners in the works. He tried so much with slice and angles, but Novak Djokovic was just irresistible."
