I can only speak for me, but I felt very guilty leaving Jada who would cry when I left the house.

I felt I was making a very selfish decision to get better as an athlete, so to find that balance wasn't easy.

But then I was with a lot of other women who weren't tennis players and they struggled with the same things! It's that letting go at first. It's finding a balance.

  3. Williams is brokenpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams 3-6 2-4 Kerber*

An incredible one-handed backhand pick-up is followed by a stunning forehand down the line.

    Kerber has two break points!

    One saved.

    The second isn't.

Another phenomenal one-handed forehand up the line sees her line up the second '7' on the fruit machine.

She needs a nudge to find the third.

  4. Kerber senses her chancepublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    *Williams 3-6 2-3 Kerber

Great rally but Williams was always in control - a swipe from midcourt sees her win the opening point.

However, unforced error number 20 brings up 15-15.

Another superb rally which Williams was dictating by spraying the German about the court ends with the American making another error.

    15-30.

Ashen: Kerber has been great so far. Serena not looking her usual self.

Wayne: If you can get into a rally with Serena, you’ve got a good chance as she always has an unforced error in her. The challenge is getting into the rally in the first place.

  8. Kerber in a spot of botherpublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams 3-6 2-2 Kerber*

40-0 but then it's Kerber's turn to strike the top of the net.

    Must be catching.

Williams presses the 'B' button and strikes angled forehand which is too good.

    It's suddenly 40-30.

And now deuce after another Kerber error.

Will the German get out of this?

    Better dictating from Williams.

The American sends the Kerber to the naughty corner after coming to the net - the German tries to lob her way out, but it's long.

Williams again comes to the net, but the problem we have seen during the match raises its ugly head again as she fires the ball into the net - a plus in football, not in tennis.

    40-30.

But Williams holds as Kerber fails with her accuracy from the back left.

Magnificent mixing-up of her shots from Kerber. Solid a as rock out there. She's stepped it up and is forcing Williams to dig deeper and up her level.

    Kim Clijsters

Angelique Kerber is very focused, she has come out here with a strong game-plan and has been executing that really well.

  12. Kerber holds under pressurepublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    *Williams 3-6 1-2 Kerber

Mini-scare for the German, but she holds.

She's forced Williams to step up, but the American is finding it hard to keep her footing on the step.

  13. Focus on Kerber servepublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams 3-6 1-1 Kerber*

    Slam dunk da funk!

Williams puts a dusting of venom on her volleyed return but it's out.

    0-15.

    15-15.

She tries it again by coming to the net - and this time her punch lands in bounds.

    30-15.

However, a tentative volley at the net allows Kerber to send the ball express delivery to Glasgow.

    30s each.

Sukh: Kerber playing top quality tennis. Serena making quite a few unforced errors.

Joel: Serena gave Kerber a lot of gifts in that 1st set. The next one will be interesting.

  15. Williams ends losing sequencepublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams 3-6 1-1 Kerber*

Kerber and Djokovic should team up as a mixed doubles pair - the German is reaching almost everything Williams is chucking at her.

    30-30.

Wait! Williams is at the net again. Will she make the volley this time? She does. That might give her some confidence - admittedly, she doesn't lack it.

    40-30.

Williams holds and stops a losing run of five games.

  16. 'Kerber can make opponents uncomfortable'published at 16:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    *Williams 3-6 0-1 Kerber

    Tracy Austin

Kerber can make opponents feel so uncomfortable. Just three unforced errors and she neutralised Serena’s forehand.

  17. Eye of the Tigerpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    *Williams 3-6 0-1 Kerber

Kerber's return is incredible, but Williams once again finds the net with a volley. That should have been the American's.

    30-0.

Kerber then does that thing where she crouches down and fires a double-hander past her opponent.

    40-0.

    40-15.

    Hold.

The German has 'Eye of the Tiger'.

Outstanding job by Kerber. Was focused from the first game, withstood the barrage from Serena and made her hit the extra ball. Serana was pressing but going too big.

  20. Game and first set Kerberpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 14 July 2018

    Williams 3-6 Kerber*

Serena Williams and the net aren't the best of friends at the moment. Another chance for an easy winner is wasted.

    0-30.

    15-30.

15-40 after Kerber's lob just lands in... or does it?

    Challenge! Challenge Computer says "NO!".

    30-30.

30-40 - Kerber now does have break point.

Williams is on the ropes and is knocked out by herself with a double-handed backhand that bounces of the cord and back down her side of the net.

    First blood Kerbs!
