That second serve just is not getting the job done for Magda Linette against someone who can return as well as Petra Kvitova does.

  2. Kvitova holdspublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

    *Linette 3-6 1-3 Kvitova

Petra Kvitova runs through the game like Zorro runs though a hapless henchman.

Merciless. 40-15 as her pounding serve sets a tempo for the match. More the happy hardcore end of the spectrum than whale song and panpipes.

  3. Kvitova breakspublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

    Linette 3-6 1-2 *Kvitova

Magda Linette lands a first serve just when she needs one at 30-40 down. One break points saved.

But she presses a little too hard on the next. Double fault, advantage Petra and another break point.

A backhand across court from the Pole brings a squeal of 'No!' from the line judge. Linette challenges. But HawkEye cannot give her a Get Out of Jail Free card.

She is off for a sit down. Changeover and a break down.

    Linette 3-6 1-0 *Kvitova

Is she waving or drowning out here? I think Magda Linette is treading water furiously just to keep her nostrils above the water line.

She has to see off two break points to hold serve. It is a struggle every time.

This was how the first set when down.

You can see the trouble that Linette is having on her second serve. She has won just 31% of points off the second attempt.

Perhaps wary of that stat, she has landed only 56% of her first serves. That is bad news...

  10. Game and first set Kvitovapublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

    *Linette 3-6 0-0 Kvitova

Magda Linette strays long on the return, Petra Kvitova hops out of the way of the looping ball and has the first set on toast in 36 minutes.

Brunch of champions. Or at least second-week denizens.

  11. Game and first set - Suarez Navarro & Mertenspublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

Ding, ding. Carla Suarez Navarro chalks up the first set against American Lauren Davis, winning 6-3 in 34 minutes.

Elise Mertens follows suit against Wang Qiang, taking the opener 6-2.

  12. Linette saves four set points, holdspublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

    Linette 3-5 *Kvitova

Magda Linette knocks back four set points on her own serve.

Gutsy, determined stuff from the Pole.

Now she has to plan an assault on the summit of Petra Kvitova's serve though...

Amazing rally between Johnson and Nishikori

Kei Nishikori obviously just took a few minutes to loosen up on court three. The Japanese eighth seed trailed 3-0 but has fought back to level against Steve Johnson.

    Too fast, too strong.

Petra Kvitova is ruling Court Two like a Megalodon.

For those who didn't learn about Megalodon yesterday on a trip to Chester Zoo, they were 18-metre long mega sharks who lived in the oceans millions of years ago.

    Fearsome.

Magda Linette sees off that spot of pressure, but it is Petra Kvitova who is making all the big moves against serve.

  16. Linettte taken to deucepublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

    Linette* 1-4 Kvitova

Magda Linette is sending up the distress flares once again at 30-30.

Petra Kvitova goes for the jugular as she rips a monster forehand down the line. No dice, just wide.

But Linette hits the net(te) on the next point and we are to deuce. And don't spare the horses.

Rafa and Andy say 'hasta luego' with a high five, then it is down to business.

Murray and doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert fire down serves from opposite ends of the court, then drag in their respective coaches for a few warm-up points.

"What time is it?" Andy asks.

    No need for clock watching.

They've got at least an hour and a half until they are due on court against Croatian sixth seeds Nikola Mektic and Franko Skugor.

  18. 'Stay humble, stay focused'published at 11:33 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

    Billie Jean King
Six-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

On what advice she would offer to 15-year-old Coco Gauff, who fought back from two match points down to progress yesterday...

I would always say remember how blessed you are to be in this position.

Its a responsibility, take care of yourself, stay humble. You can get full of yourself very quickly.

But the important thing is to re-calibrate, stay focused on your goals, she's very good at revealing her personality - I love that. Agents will tell you not to but she is wonderful for doing that.

We're going to know the person, not the tennis player, and I love that.

  20. Kvitova holdspublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 6 July 2019

    *Linette 1-4 Kvitova

Petra Kvitova is threatening to run away with this as she rattles to 40-0 like an express train.

Magda Linette puts a brief spanner in the spokes with a fine running forehand down the line.

But that is all she is taking out of the game.
