    *Svitolina 5-4 Konta

Thirteen unforced errors from Konta compared to only seven from Svitolina. In a game of such small margins, Konta will be looking to keep the mistakes to a minimum.

She also then produces her first ace of the match on her way to a hold.

But now comes the hard part of having to break her opponent's serve. Svitolina will take the first set if she can't do so.

    Svitolina 5-3 Konta*

Elina Svitolina is one game away from the opening set. Konta had one break point chance, couldn't take it and Svitolina, for the first time in this match, nudges two games clear.

    *Svitolina 4-3 Konta

We now have three quarters of the court in sunshine. Konta, standing in the dark part of this show court, gets herself to a break point but the opportunity is only on the table for a few seconds before an ace is belted down the 'T'. Deuce in game eight.

  4. Svitolina breaks againpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 3 September 2019

    *Svitolina 4-3 Konta

Svitolina, with an absolutely brilliant shot, is crouching low, manages to get a backhand on the stretch to a Konta backhand and arrows it perfectly into the corner, past the Briton and for the third game in a row we have a break of serve.

That's two for Svitolina and one for Konta. Svitolina now only two holds away from the opening set. Work for Konta to do, once more.

    Svitolina 3-3 Konta*

The drop shot worked for Konta in game six, but not so in game seven as it doesn't have the legs to creep over the net.

That gives Svitolina two break points.

Johanna Konta was really taking her chances there.

She was being really aggressive and it has paid off beautifully for her.

  7. Konta breaks back immediatelypublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 3 September 2019

    Svitolina 3-3 Konta*

We've not seen the drop shot utilised up until now and Konta, showing some lovely disguise, sends it short. Svitolina gets there, but off balance can only steer it long for a break-back point.

And Konta takes it. Svitolina looks furious with herself at losing her hard-won advantage. It only lasted five minutes. Back on serve in set one.

    *Svitolina 3-2 Konta

Konta stays in the rally, opting for something different with the backhand slices, but Svitolina dispatches a cross-court winner. But the Ukrainian then leaves one short and is instantly punished by Konta. Deuce.

  9. 'Smart play'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 3 September 2019

That was a really brilliant point from Konta.

She mixed it up beautifully and changed the depth a few times within that rally.

A really smart point from her.

    *Svitolina 3-2 Konta

A great two handed backhand down the line winner is a perfect start to Konta's attempt to break back instantly.

Then another down the line winner, this time on the forehand, gives the Briton 0-30, two points away from an instant recovery.

  11. 'Second serve let Konta down'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 3 September 2019

Svitolina really does make you hit so many balls. If I was Svitolina, I'd be playing a lot more balls down the centre to take those angles away from Konta.

Johanna Konta has one of the best serves on the tour, but her second serve there didn't do enough.

    *Svitolina 3-2 Konta

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows

Konta has a more aggressive approach than the consistent Svitolina, who continues to pound back the ball as she tries to wear the Brit down.

The danger for Konta is that leads to a temptation to end the point by going for a thumping winner, but that results in more unforced errors.

Four in that game hands over the break...

    *Svitolina 3-2 Konta

A backhand into the net gives Svitolina a second chance for the first break of the match. Konta's first serve finds net, not court, and she then nets with a backhand.

    First advantage, Svitolina.

    Svitolina 2-2 Konta*

Svitolina is forced to go running with a well-timed backhand from Konta skimming the net, and the Briton is then waiting to dispatch the forehand to take us to game point, but a cross-court backhand is pulled too much to the right, taking us to deuce again.

A good serve into the Svitolina body puts the pressure on the world number five and she then goes long with a forehand as Konta sees off that break point. Deuce.

Svitolina is like a brick wall. It's really tough to find a way past her.

I just hope Konta can stick with her in these longer rallies.

Really impressive driving from the back of the court from both girls so far.

And, when they do put their opponent in trouble, they're both very quick to get on to the return and spread the ball to the opposite side of the court.

Svitolina's boyfriend, Gael Monfils, is among the crowd and will be happy to see Svitolina take the next service game to love.

Monfils has one US Open semi-final match to his name - back in 2016 - with Svitolina aiming to reach the final four here for the first time.
