Medvedev makes a mess of a volley, largely down to an amazing return of serve from Djokovic, and it's three set points to Djokovic.

Daniil Medvedev has picked a dreadful time to lose his first serve, and he's soon 0-30 down...

First set tie-break, anyone?

It's down to Daniil Medvedev to take us there.

Djokovic has spent more time on court than Medvedev so, weirdly, it's probably in his interest to keep these points shorter.

Medvedev charges once again to a drop shot but Djokovic is there to meet the return, before a long Medvedev backhand hurries him to a love hold.

Medvedev is serving very well. He's at 73% first serves. When you're going after it, that is very respectable indeed.

Yeah, Daniil Medvedev has decided he's not quite done with this set yet.

A superb cross-court forehand takes him to 40-0, and he rattles along to a hold.

It is a great atmosphere on Rod Laver Arena, there is a wonderful electricity around this match. The stadium might only be half full but it is the best atmosphere of the Championships.

Chris Raybould: You know how we have always said that Novak loves the long, lung busting, ankle bucking rallies... I believe there suiting Medvedev at the moment, he’s won the long rallies & they have been big points already in this set. Medvedev has settled down nicely, game on.

Dennis Ethan: I have never seen someone going toe to toe in the long rallies on hard courts like Daniil Medvedev is doing now.

Excellent serving from Djokovic, keeping Medvedev rooted to the spot, and he races ahead to a hold.

Novak Djokovic just cannot kill these points off.

Daniil Medvedev is always there, running around, retrieving every ball, although the Russian larrups a backhand long for 15-15.

Fascinating tactics by Djokovic because he is using that slice to draw Medvedev forward. It wasn't a comfortable smash from Medvedev for 30-0, even though he made it. One thing we've learned during the tournament is that area - his net play - can vastly improve.

Medvedev shows a bit of net play of his own, first getting a volleying response that Djokovic can only bunt back, before finishing off the point with a smash of his own.

A 20-shot rally goes Djokovic's way, both players breathing deeply, before Medvedev decides to end things with back-to-back aces.

Djokovic is trying to change the rhythm of what they've been playing so far.

He is going for the shorter shot to bring Medvedev forwards and backwards rather than side to side along the baseline.

A fine return out wide from Medvedev almost surprises Djokovic as he darts to the net, but he's got enough stretch in him to get the ball back over for a winner.

Ooh! Djokovic gets away with a drop shot this time. It's chased down by Medvedev but Djokovic lobs him and Medvedev, having to run around the ball, duffs his response into the umpire's chair.

A brilliant serve from the world number one takes him to 40-0, but he misses a forehand to give Medvedev a sniff.
