    Tig* 4-5 Osaka

First glimmer of a reaction from Naomi Osaka after an early mis-hit, before a double-fault puts Tig 30-15 up.

She's better on her next serve, though, before Tig grabs the break point as Osaka crashes a backhand into the net.

Tig breaks. Osaka sends a forehand way over the baseline and that's a lifeline for Tig. Osaka will not be happy with that one.

    Tig 3-5 Osaka*

New balls, please. Great movement from Naomi Osaka kickstarts this game as she nabs the first point from Tig, moving in towards the net while sending a spinning forehand away from her opponent.

Another easy point for Osaka, a solid backhand off Tig's serve to move 30-15 ahead.

She then brings up two break points with a perfect forehand winner into the corner. Tig shouts 'come on' in frustration. Osaka can't convert the first, nor the second, with a mis-hit flying off in the direction of a line judge. Deuce.

An Osaka backhand slammed into the net gives Tig the first advantage, but she scuppers it with a third double-fault. She then sends a return into the net, and it's a third set point for Osaka, who then finds the net herself.

Better from Tig though, battling through to save those three set points and then take the game. Osaka to serve for the set.

    Tig* 2-5 Osaka

Nice, clean hits from Naomi Osaka on serve. Patricia Maria Tig goes for a cheeky drop shot at 30-0 down but it falls just shy of the net.

Another love-game in a row for Osaka.

    Tig 2-4 Osaka*

Patricia Maria Tig is really looking for the lines on her serves to avoid being given the runaround by Naomi Osaka.

A fine ace, her second of the day, brings up 40-15, before another seals the hold. Lovely stuff.

    Tig* 1-4 Osaka

Clay may not be her favourite but Naomi Osaka will be pleased with her start today.

An easy love-game hold that one.

The world number two CAN challenge for the world number one ranking at this tournament, but would have to reach the final in order to usurp Ashleigh Barty at the top of the standings.

The furthest she's gone in Paris is the third round, so might be a tall order.

    Tig 1-3 Osaka*

Naomi Osaka slaps two forehand returns into the net as Patricia Maria Tig eases to 40-0 on serve.

She's not going to be able to steam roll this one though, as Osaka gets on the board, but Tig gets her first game of the day on the next point.

  7. Postpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 30 May 2021

    Tig* 0-3 Osaka

Naomi Osaka takes good control in her second service game. After another early double fault, she breezes through the next couple of points.

She brings play up to the net, Tig tries to send a lob over her head but it's not enough, Osaka can reach it and smashes the winner to take the game.

    Tig 0-2 Osaka*

There's a bit of a breeze on Phillippe Chatrier this morning and it's having an early effect on Tig's serve. Osaka brings up break point but Tig stops her in her tracks, a sweet backhand drop shot that Osaka doesn't even bother to try and get to.

Advantage Tig. Then back to deuce as Osaka sends Tig the wrong way. The Romanian is really having a bit of difficulty on her first serve, unable to convert another advantage and back to a fourth deuce in this game, and then a fifth as another perfectly-timed forehand from Osaka kills another advantage.

Big shots from Osaka give her two break points in succession, but she can't convert either. She soon gets another as a sliding Tig sends a backhand too long.

This time, Osaka gets the break, measuring her opponent up and sending her the wrong way.

  11. Media is 'part of the job'published at 10:19 British Summer Time 30 May 2021

    Osaka v Tig

Osaka's move has been applauded by athletes both in tennis and other sports.

Though while many have said they respect her decision, they also believe media obligations are "part of the job".

Iga Swiatek, the reigning French Open women's champion, said: "Talking to press after a loss, is not the most enjoyable thing to do.

"It may be hard, but I feel like with proper kind of support and, with distance and balance, it's part of the job."

Rafael Nadal, 13-time French Open men's champion, said: "For me, without the press and without the people who write the news and the achievements that we are having around the world, we would probably not be the athletes that we are today. I don't think we would have the recognition that we have around the world and we would not be that popular.

  12. No media for Osakapublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 30 May 2021

Japan's Osaka created a bit of a stir this week by saying she will not take questions from the media at Roland Garros.

She said expecting players to answer questions after a defeat amounted to "kicking a person while they're down".

She added the decision was "nothing personal" against the tournament and that she hopes the "considerable" fine she expects to receive will go to a mental health charity.

Grand Slam rules state players can be fined up to $20,000 (£14,160) for failing to meet their media obligations.

Tig* 0-1 Osaka (*denotes next server)

Some nervy serving from Naomi Osaka early on, a double fault to get Tig on the board before slicing a backhand off court to allow the Romanian to level at 30-30.

An early break point for Tig as she sends a lovely forehand return into the corner. She can't deal with Osaka's next serve though and straight to deuce.

Osaka takes the advantage and Tig sends a return into the net. First hold for Osaka.

    Osaka v Tig

So let's turn our attention to the first match up on Philippe Chatrier this morning.

Second seed Naomi Osaka takes on world number 63 Patricia Maria Tig of Romania, in what is their second meeting, Osaka having won their last way back in 2015.

Osaka, 23, has won all four of her Grand Slam titles on hard courts and is not comfortable on the clay, having won just one match on the surface since she last contested the French Open in May 2019.

  16. Fans! FANS!published at 10:08 British Summer Time 30 May 2021

It doesn't seem five minutes since the French Open was last on our screens, but it was just seven months ago.

After switching to an unfamiliar October slot in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the tournament returns to the late Parisian spring this year.

With France still under coronavirus restrictions, the tournament will again be played in front of a limited number of fans. And yes, I still get excited when I see fans at sporting events after soooo long without them.

From 30 May to 8 June, there will be 5,388 spectators allowed on site each day, split across six different zones.

The country is lifting some restrictions on 9 June, meaning Court Philippe Chatrier and Court Suzanne Lenglen will be able to host 5,000 people for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. The number of fans on the whole site will rise to 13,146.
