    *Nadal 1-1 Norrie

Cameron Norrie's biggest challenge in this match - and there are many of them - is going to be making an impact on Rafael Nadal's serve.

That is easier said than done. He barely gets a sniff at a decent opening in the first three points of Nadal's second service game. 40-0.

  2. 'Good attitude' from Norriepublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 5 June 2021

How good is this attitude from Cameron Norrie? He's come out so fired up and willing to fight for every point. He's super quick and super fit.

    * Nadal 1-1 Norrie

But a booming serve puts Rafa in all sorts of trouble, handing Cam Norrie the initiative with a big forehand that Nadal can only dribble into the net.

A good start from the Brit, this.

    Nadal 1-0 Norrie*

Getting involved in baseline rallies with Rafa Nadal isn't necessarily the best way to beat him over the long haul.

But Cameron Norrie is proving he's more than capable of attempting it as he holds his own and forces Nadal to hit one long.

Nadal is off target with his next return but Norrie throws in a careless double fault and it's 40-30.

    Nadal 1-0 Norrie*

Cameron Norrie has played two excellent points to begin his service game.

That he only won one of them tells you everything you need to know about how difficult this task is for him.

    Nadal 1-0 Norrie

Rafa Nadal gets himself out of that early pickle with a couple of big forehands that push Cam Norrie right back beyond the baseline.

And he disguises a lovely whipped effort to complete the turnaround from 0-30.

    First blood to Rafa.

    *Nadal 0-0 Norrie

Wow. And Nadal follows up with a double fault. 0-30.

Drama already? Maybe not. A couple of huge booming forehands into the corner of the court and it's 15-30.

If you're not a diehard tennis fan, you might not be as familiar with Cameron Norrie as with, say, Andy Murray or Dan Evans.

But the British number two is a player on the rise, reaching a Grand Slam third round for the third time in nine months after runs to the last 32 of both the US and Australian Open.

Born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand by Scottish and Welsh parents, Norrie switched his allegiance to Great Britain at the age of 16 and moved to London.

The 25-year-old is ranked 45th in the world and has already demonstrated his ability on the clay courts by reaching two ATP Tour finals this year, losing both, to Albert Ramos Vinolas in Portugal and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Lyon.

To answer our earlier teaser, Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic are the men Cameron Norrie will be trying to emulate today - the only two players to have beaten Rafael Nadal on the clay of Roland Garros.

Swede Soderling produced one of the biggest shocks in tennis history when he ousted Nadal in the fourth round in 2009 on his way to the final, while Djokovic beat the Spaniard in the quarter-finals in 2015.

The only other occasion in the past 16 years where Nadal failed to win the tournament was in 2016 when he withdrew injured after round two.

    Nadal v Norrie

Cameron Norrie is yet to take a set off fellow left-hander Rafael Nadal after their two previous meetings - both of which have come this year.

Nadal has already ended the Brit's hopes at one Grand Slam, beating him 7-5 6-2 7-5 in the Australian Open third round - but Norrie was certainly competitive in that one.

They have since met once on clay, in the Barcelona Open quarter-finals in April, where the Spaniard cantered to a more routine 6-1 6-4 triumph on his favourite surface.

    Nadal v Norrie

One look at the numbers gives you an idea of how gargantuan a task Cameron Norrie is facing on Court Suzanne-Lenglen this afternoon.

The 13 titles Rafael Nadal has won at Roland Garros is scary enough.

But then consider on top that he has won 102 matches on the Paris clay and lost only two since triumphing on his debut there in 2005 - and it becomes downright frightening.

Any idea who those two 'King of Clay' conquerors were by the way? Answers coming up in a few minutes - one is not tricky but the other is a far less familiar name...

Good afternoon and thanks for joining us on what can legitimately be termed a 'Super Saturday' at Roland Garros.

The 'Big Three' in men's tennis are all in third-round action, Novak Djokovic taking on Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis as we speak, while Roger Federer faces Germany's Dominik Koepfer in tonight's evening match.

But we will be focusing on Cameron Norrie's attempts to reach a first Grand Slam fourth round and ensure British singles involvement in the French Open's second week.

The problem? He's up against the 'King of Clay' himself - the 13-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal.
