What a start for the underdog as Pedro Cachin, after saving a break point in his opening service game, then breaks the Djokovic serve a few minutes later.

Cachin has already produced a couple of stunning passing shots and a loud roar from the Wimbledon crowd and a start no one saw coming.

Zhu Lin looks a completely different player in the second set, holding to love.

She's then gifted two break points through an Iga Swiatek foot fault but the top seed snuffs out the chance, serving well and winning the next four points to hold.

It feels like mission impossible against the world number two. Novak Djokovic has not lost on Centre Court since Andy Murray beat him in that final in 2013.

The Centre Court crowd, as always, are getting behind the underdog and trying to offer as much encouragement as they can in the opening exchanges.

Novak Djokovic cuts a sliced backhand into the net to bring Pedro Cachin into contention at 40-30, and that's long from the reigning champion!

    Deuce.

    One-way traffic into Centre Court.

Things have got much busier as the action starts on the show-courts.

The queue just before Djokovic came out snaked all the way down three flights of stairs from the upper deck of Centre to the ground level entrance.

Feels like this is a knock-on effect of the increased security checks.

Possibly the biggest cheer of the day so far on Court One.

That’s because Zhu Lin has finally got her side of the scoreboard ticking after 32 minutes

Swiatek has been utterly dominant and it looked like Iga’s Bakery was already open for business.

It still might be. But dishing out breadsticks rather than the bagel.

Another Wimbledon tradition is that the reigning men’s champion kicks off proceedings on Centre Court and that’s what we have today with Novak Djokovic against 28-year-old Argentine Pedro Cachin first up.

Djokovic has won this title seven times, aiming to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight and also join Federer and Bjorn Borg in winning five consecutive championships.

The Serb’s record on Centre Court is an incredible one as he has not lost there since the 2013 final which gave Andy Murray the first of his two Wimbledon successes.

Djokovic has only lost twice at Wimbledon since then, in 2016 and 2017 with both defeats coming on Court One.

Cachin, ranked 68th, made the third round of the US Open last year but this will be his main draw Wimbledon debut and if he wins today it’ll go down as one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history.

Novak Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic was asked to sum up the Serb’s on-court mindset as he bids to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles and remain on track for a calendar Grand Slam.

"He takes your legs, then he takes your soul, then he digs your grave and you have a funeral and you’re dead. Bye bye, thank you for coming," Ivanisevic summed up.

Cheery stuff, Goran, thanks for that.

There seems to be quite a few of you talking about having problems in the Queue to get into Wimbledon...

Dan: Queue an absolute shambles so far. Stewards and punters alike saying it’s the worst it’s ever been. We arrived at 6:15 and haven’t even left the pre-queue park!

Anon: I was looking forward to a day of tennis but I'm still waiting in Wimbledon Park in the queue. Apparently less than 500 people are getting through security per hour. Britain can't even be proud of queueing any more!

Dave: Been in the Wimbledon queue since 5:30am, still not in and no idea when. Disgraceful.

But she really should have had this one wrapped up in two, missing out on two match points in a second-set tie-break.

Novak Djokovic already has won the Australian Open and French Open in 2023 - and he hopes Wimbledon will be the third leg of the calendar Grand Slam.

He has won this event seven times, including six of the last eight editions and will have been delighted when he saw Friday’s draw.

Seeded second, behind world number one Carlos Alcaraz (who Djokovic beat in four sets at Roland Garros last month), Djokovic, if he advances, will not have to play a player inside the top 30 of the world rankings until the fourth round at the earliest.

Indeed, seventh seed Russian Andrey Rublev is the only player in the top 10 in Djokovic’s quarter of the draw, while Nick Kyrgios, last year’s runner-up, was in that quarter but withdrew late last night because of a wrist injury.

The winner of this tie will face either Australia’s Jordan Thompson, 70th in the world, or American Brandon Nakashima, ranked 55th.

Looking further ahead, three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka, now 38 and down at 88th in the rankings but who beat Andy Murray in an event at Bordeaux in May, is a potential third-round opponent.

  20. Pegula serving for matchpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Pegula 6-2 6-7 (8-10) 5-3 Davis

Jessica Pegula had two match points saved by fellow American Lauren Davis in the second set, but the fourth seed is rallying in the decider.

Having lost on her serve in the first game of the third, she broke back and, after trading a couple of games, she's broken Davis again this time to 15.

She's now serving for a spot in the second round.
