    Swiatek v Zhu

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Grass is not Iga Swiatek's greatest surface at all, she is a real clay court specialist but she is capable of playing on anything.

She is just a quite brilliant tennis player who has just blossomed over the past couple of years.

Harriet Dart has to get herself into it right now. This is slipping away if she’s not careful.

    Dart 7-6 (7-4) 0-6 1-3 Parry*

A couple of huge points coming up here for Harriet Dart.

She saves the first break point with a volley, but Parry pounces on a second serve to take the second.

The Briton is in real trouble now.

  4. Break points Parrypublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Dart 7-6 (7-4) 0-6 1-2 Parry

Dart won't want to offer Parry any further encouragement here. A hold of serve is vital.

More signs of frustration from Dart, who takes out some anger on her racquet after slipping 15-30 behind.

Long from Dart at the baseline. Two break points.

World number one Iga Swiatek has insisted grass courts hold no fear for her, despite Wimbledon being comfortably her least successful Grand Slam event.

She's already wrapped up one Grand Slam success in 2023, after winning last month's French Open at Roland Garros.

A fourth-round appearance in 2021 is the Pole’s best run in SW19, but she did reach the semi-finals on grass at Bad Homburg last week before pulling out with illness.

"I believe the best players can play on all surfaces," Swiatek said, before her first-round match with China’s Zhu Lin, which will be starting shortly on Court One.

Dart is really not happy with how things are currently going - muttering to herself and her team in the crowd.

She hides under her towel at the change of ends and throws her water bottles on the floor in frustration.

She'll be having a little word with herself under that pink Wimbledon towel as she looks to secure a crucial hold.

    *Dart 7-6 (7-4) 0-6 1-2 Parry

A loose forehand from Harriet Dart lets Diane Parry off the hook, with that the first hold of serve in set three. Disappointment for the Briton, she worked hard to create that opportunity.

Dart is struggling on serve, she has a heavily taped shoulder, it feels pretty slow and every second serve is under pressure.

  9. Swiatek up on Court Onepublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

Iga Swiatek enters Wimbledon as the women's world number one for the 66th successive week - and she's about to get her SW19 campaign going in the opening match on Court One.

This is the sixth successive major the Pole has held the world number one spot - the longest Slam streak as a number one seed since Ash Barty's 13 consecutive majors from 2013-16.

This year's French Open champion's dominance is reflected by the fact she has the most match wins (103), titles (11) and 6-0 set wins (37) of any player on the WTA Tour since the start of the 2022 season.

She also had a 22-0 career record against Chinese players - which is not promising news for the player on the other side of net, Zhu Lin.

    Dart 7-6 (7-4) 0-6 1-1 Parry*

Parry misses a seemingly straightforward forehand and turns to show a look of frustration to her team.

Dart can't apply pressure, however, a mishit of her own handing Parry 30-15.

The Frenchwoman finds the corners to reach game point, but a double fault keeps Dart in contention at deuce. It's beginning to feel a bit tense out there.

  11. Parry breaks backpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Dart 7-6 (7-4) 0-6 1-1 Parry*

Harriet Dart can't back up her promising start.

Diane Parry executes a backhand winner to set up two break back points, and a fizzing forehand down the line clinches the first.

    Back on serve.

Those Davis fans, and the neutral Americans, will be happy.

    We’re going to three!

Lauren Davis digs in to save two match points, causing problems for Pegula with her backhand slice.

Davis pumps her fist in the direction of her coach as she seals the set.

It's gone a little bit gloomy out here and, dare I say it, I think I felt a few spots of rain.

Nothing major but something to keep an eye on.

Dart is looking a bit more fired up in this set, she won't want to lose any momentum. Especially not when she's secured that early break.

Harriet Dart engages the crowd from the start in set three, making her intentions clear as she sets up a break point.

'Come on!' roars Dart. The early break is hers this time after Parry misses a backhand.

A perfect start for the Briton in the decider.

  15. 'Rublev could cause serious damage to the big hitters'published at 12:53 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Rublev 6-3 7-5 6-4 Purcell

    Jonathan Overend
    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

Andrey Rublev is a player with so much ability. If he has the belief that he could go on to have his best Wimbledon this year, then he could be the man to cause some serious damage and trouble to the big hitters.

Grass isn't necessarily his thing but he showed, in reaching the Halle final two weeks ago, that he can get good results on his surface.

    Tie-break time.

Lauren Davis hasn’t lost a set decider this year, winning both of her previous tie-breaks in 2023.

The world number 46 moves 3-1 ahead before Pegula, helped by a wonderful winner and an error by her fellow American, takes four points on the spin.

    Tight and tense.

Davis seems to be edging the support from the American accents around me, perhaps they just want to see three sets either way.

Right, here we go then. After a bit of a break from the court, hopefully Harriet Dart has managed to eliminate that second set from her memory.

A place in the second round is on the line.

Game, set and match - Rublevpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Rublev 6-3 7-5 6-4 Purcell

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Seventh seed Andrey Rublev is safely through to round two with a 6-3 7-5 6-4 win over Australia’s Max Purcell.

Purcell, who had earlier been unsuccessful with an underarm serve, had a 5-2 advantage in the second set only for the Russian to win five games in a row.

There were three breaks of serve in the opening three games of set three with Rublev then holding his impressive serve from then on to advance.

Rublev is in the same quarter as Novak Djokovic with the pair scheduled to meet in the last eight. But next up for Rublev is either fellow Russian Aslan Karatsev or Luca van Assche of France.

  19. Game and second set - Parrypublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Dart 7-6 (7-4) 0-6 Parry

A break to love seals the bagel for Diane Parry, who responds to her first set disappointment emphatically.

That second set took just 32 minutes.

Did Harriet Dart ease off towards the end there to prioritise the third set? Lots of thinking for the Briton to do here with her opponent full of confidence once more.

  20. 'Parry's got herself back'published at 12:45 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Dart 7-6 (7-4) 0-5 Parry

    Jo Durie

I wasn’t sure about Parry’s attitude after losing in that opening set but she has pulled herself around very well. She's got herself back and balanced in her emotions.
