Last week, Andy Murray spoke about showing less frustration on court when he was not playing as well as he would expect.

There was plenty of emotion during his matches last season - chuntering at his box, screaming at himself, threatening to smash racquets.

"It's probably how you're treating yourself in those moments and being a bit kinder to yourself, the people around you, lowering some of your own expectations, controlling what you can control," he said.

Today, we've barely seen any reaction from him.

The lid is shut but surely he must be bubbling underneath.

Let's be real here. Andy Murray has pretty much no chance. From what we've seen over the last two hours, it just looks like he has no chance of getting back into this match.

It's a monumental uphill battle. It's hard to see how he gets back into this match.

    That's the start he needed.

Andy Murray battles to a hold from 30-30 to get up and running in the third set. It doesn't matter how he wins them at this point.

Andy Murray will serve first in this must-win third set.

Can he produce another memorable fightback in the twilight of a career that has been packed full of ridiculous feats?

Nobody in the sport has come back from 0-2 down more than Murray. It's what he does.

The on-court temperature means regular trips to the towel will be required for Murray and Etcheverry.

Last week, he told the BBC why he thinks the placement of towel racks is what is causing the ever-lengthening matches.

"I've timed it and I'm aware this sounds unbelievably boring..." he starts.

"But depending on how big the court is, it can be six to nine extra seconds every point to grab the towel.

"If they put the towels directly behind the court it would help speed things up but apparently that doesn't look good on TV.

"That's the things which has extended the match length, not that the points are longer or the balls are much slower - we've been talking about the balls being slower for years.

"I think they should do something to change where the towels are."

    *Murray 4-6 2-6 0-0 Etcheverry

Andy Murray loves a comeback from two sets down.

But there have been few signs over the past hour that that is a realistic achievement today.

Etcheverry pops away successive aces to put himself on course for the Australian Open second round.

But it doesn't always tend to be so simple when Murray is involved...

Tomas Martin Etcheverry is showing few signs of slowing down.

Andy Murray will be fully aware there is simply no room for error now.

But, a break down in the second set, a couple of misses mean Tomas Martin Etcheverry will have two break points.

Murray survives one, but a poor backhand has surely handed his opponent a two-set lead.

It's a long, long way back from here.

The errors are coming thick and fast on the forehand side. It doesn't seem to be quite clear what Andy Murray is trying to do with it.

He's missed some in the net, he's missed some long. He's not picking the right ball to take on.

    *Murray 4-6 2-4 Etcheverry

There is something missing with Andy Murray today, but it's hard to put your finger on exactly what that might be.

It just all feels a little bit flat from the former world number one - but his attempts to get back into this certainly aren't being helped by the level Tomas Martin Etcheverry continues to operate at in this match.

A stunning drop shot is followed by a couple of aces to secure a comfortable hold for the Argentine, who is moving closer to a two-set lead.

Paul: Andy Murray has had a fantastic career but surely time now to think about retiring? It's painful watching a once great player getting beat by players he'd have no issues with back in the day.

You can usually gauge how Andy Murray is feeling at a tournament by his chat in a news conference and the content of his social media posts.

If he is quiet - on both fronts - then it's a good guess he's not feeling too good.

But the Scot was very chatty in his pre-tournament news conference and afterwards in his interview with BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller.

He's also been looking relaxed in his mum Judy's Instagram posts - which have revealed his ability to solve a Rubik's cube.

You won't be surprised to learn he is as competitive at that as he is tennis...

Andy Murray misses another backhand to bring Tomas Martin Etcheverry to deuce.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry is aiming to reach the Australian Open second round for only the second time, having reached that stage for the first time in his career last year.

But he recorded his best Grand Slam result in 2023 by reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, and he's eyeing a run as the 30th seed in Melbourne.

He has hit 21 winners so far, compared to 13 by Andy Murray, who desperately needs to find a spark here.

A comfortable hold backs up the break and puts the Argentine 3-1 ahead in the second set.

Andy Murray drops a forehand into the net and despite some great work to save several break points, he falls to the fourth and Tomas Martin Etcheverry has the early advantage in the second set. Frustration for Murray, he's second-best here so far.

Oh wow! That's how you save a break point.

Nerves of steel and hands of feather.

But will it be a catalyst for Murray to go on and hold?

He gees the crowd up, asking them to help him.

A second break point arrives for Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The response? Ace.
