Murray had a chat with his coach Mark Hilton at the start of the second set and the message must have been to try mixing it up.

The problem is, when Murray has galloped forward, Etcheverry has picked him off with a couple of outstanding lobs.

    Sensational touch.

Andy Murray has got to move forward. His skill level in the all-court is so good. I don't think we see enough of Murray at the net. I think to win this match he's going to have to find his way there a little bit more.

The winner of the match between Andy Murray and Tomas Martin Etcheverry will play either Yannick Hanfmann or Gael Monfils in the next round.

Monfils, a two-time quarter-finalist and most recently in 2022, has broken his German opponent to take the first set on court six, which has a courtside bar...

Tomas Martin Etcheverry is hitting big and he's hitting clean.

A punishing backhand winner from the Argentine is backed up by a delicate drop shot as he edges ahead on Andy Murray's serve at the start of the second set.

There's plenty of appreciation from the crowd as Murray stands firm to prevent the situation worsening, for now...

Tomas Martin Etcheverry is never off a tennis court. He's never out of the gym. He's putting in hour after hour after hour. I don't see him breaking down physically today.

Andy Murray is going to have to take his opportunities when they come.

    *Murray 4-6 0-0 Etcheverry

Tomas Martin Etcheverry polishes off the first set with an ace after an hour on court against Andy Murray.

It's been a tug-of-war for the majority of the contest, but it's the Argentine who finishes strongest.

    Murray 4-5 Etcheverry*

Andy Murray has a quick word with himself after missing a forehand on the first point as he searches for a route back into the set, but more frustration follows as he sends a shot long from the baseline.

That one's long too, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry will have three set points.

  12. 'Murray is very well liked'published at 06:59 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Andy Murray is good fun. He's very well liked. People don't have a bad word to say about Murray. He's fighting the right battles in tennis, like the battle for equality in the sport.

One thing that has been very clear is that he keeps his team tight. You don't necessarily see him around so much. It's very business like, just like all the top players. He's a lot more relaxed and funny which is a side we didn't see a few years ago.

Can Andy Murray hold here and give himself another shot at restoring parity in the first set? He can and, like Tomas Martin Etcheverry, he does so with ease.

In fact, he goes one better, wrapping up a love hold to force the 30th seed to serve out the opener. A pleasing service game for the Briton, but is it too late?

You don't need to tell Andy Murray his serving has not been good enough in recent times.

He knows full well and that was one of the things he was working hard to improve on in pre-season.

But he's struggling with it again today.

Having lost his opening service game, Murray is now staring down the barrel after dropping another one.

Only landing 46% of first serves - and winning just 33% of second-serve points - are indicative of the problems. That must improve.

  15. Etcheverry holdspublished at 06:56 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    *Murray 3-5 Etcheverry

No worries whatsoever for Tomas Martin Etcheverry in his latest service game, a rare quick hold to 15 leaving him one game from the first set as we approach the hour mark.

There was a brief pause in that previous game because a ball kid seemed to be struggling with a physical issue.

Umpire Aurelie Tourte helped the girl off the court before play resumed after a heartfelt round of applause.

The breather initially appeared to help Murray as he saved two break points.

But it was third time lucky for Etcheverry.

Jiten: Warning signs already there for Murray about things he has spoken about. A lack of 1st serves and especially the serve up the ‘T’ on the deuce and out wide on the ad, means a lack of free points on serve.

    Murray 3-4 Etcheverry*

Andy Murray sees off the first break point with a forehand winner, before hanging in a rally long enough to see Tomas Martin Etcheverry miss his next attempted lob.

One more to go... But he drops a forehand into the net and he's going to have to come back from a break behind once again in this opening set.

Well, he's going to have three. An inch-perfect lob beats Andy Murray and the Briton is in a spot of trouble now. Can he pull off a great escape?
