If blue is your favourite colour then Melbourne Park is your place.

Look at the sky! Look at the court!

Sparkling like an ocean you take a dip in during your daydreams.

One statistic I'm going to be interested in this year is Andy Murray's break point conversion.

As we get older, we start to get a little bit more anxious in life. We know our time playing is coming to an end. Certainly last year, he didn't execute well enough on break points.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry blinks first in another lengthy exchange - this one lasting 19 shots - to put Andy Murray well on course for a straightforward hold, and he achieves just that with an ace. We remain on serve after those two early breaks!

  5. 'I won't be out there giggling on the court'published at 06:35 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Andy Murray said he wants to manage the important moments better in 2024, as he looks to avoid becoming involved in more marathon Grand Slam matches this year.

    *Murray 2-2 Etcheverry

That's very well done by Tomas Martin Etcheverry to hold there. Andy Murray sensed an opportunity after getting the crowd going by winning a 20-shot rally, but the 30th seed remains calms and takes the game by sending a forehand winner into an open court.

  7. Break point Murraypublished at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Murray 2-1 Etcheverry*

Half an opportunity for Andy Murray as a couple of loose backhands from Tomas Martin Etcheverry leave him 15-30 up. The Argentine recovers, but Murray won't let him escape easily.

Forcing his opponent to play an extra shot, Murray reaches deuce, before shaking his racquet above his head after he comes out on top in an extended rally with a whipped forehand. Break point - and very positive signs for Murray right now.

Two-time quarterfinalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has caused an upset on ranking as she beats 21st seed Donna Vekic.

The 32-year-old has had injury troubles over the past few years so her ranking of 59 in the world is deceiving.

The Russian will play either Taylor Townsend or Paula Badosa in round two.

Ideally Andy Murray does not want another marathon match.

The early signs are we're going to get one.

These two fellas scrapped it out for over three hours in Indian Wells and Basel last year. In three-set matches.

Pray those fans sat in the sun have slapped on the SPF.

    Murray 2-1 Etcheverry*

Andy Murray makes it two games in a row to hit the front in the first set.

What a way to take it too. Murray appears on the back foot but steals the point with a forehand winner to get over the line after Tomas Martin Etcheverry had closed to within a point.

Winning is one thing, winning efficiently is rather another when it comes to Andy Murray.

If he is to achieve a deep run at the Australian Open this time around, he's going to need to try and avoid the gruelling marathon matches which took us all on a wild rollercoaster this time last year.

Murray reached the third round last year, coming through successive five-set epics against 13th seed Matteo Berrettini and Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis before falling in four sets against 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut.

  13. Murray breaks backpublished at 06:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    *Murray 1-1 Etcheverry

    Takes it!

Just. Andy Murray gets fortunate as a forehand clips the net cord and catches Tomas Martin Etcheverry off guard. It's enough to secure the break back.

Two games played in 16 minutes. Yep, we're in this for the long haul, folks!

  14. Break point Murraypublished at 06:17 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Murray 0-1 Etcheverry*

A second break point for Andy Murray but it's rescued superbly by Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who drifts a disguised drop shot over to leave his opponent no hope of beating the second bounce.

Break point number three arrives shortly after, though...

    Murray 0-1 Etcheverry*

An excellent forehand pass from Andy Murray brings him to 40-30 on Tomas Martin Etcheverry's serve as he chases an immediate response.

The former world number one then outlasts his opponent in a rally to reach deuce, to the delight of the crowd who are rooting for the Briton in the early stages.

A miss from the Argentine gives Murray a first break point, but he can't take his chance despite facing a second serve.

Judging by the crowds, it looks like somebody of great stature is playing next on the Kia Arena.

    Oh, it's Andy Murray!

This court, the fourth biggest at Melbourne Park, does not require a ticket and anyone with a grounds pass can enter.

But that means patience is required. There was a long queue shortly before Murray walked out on court with fans I spoke to hoping it would not be a long wait.

  18. Etcheverry breaks Murray in opening gamepublished at 06:08 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Murray 0-1 Etcheverry*

We are up and running over on the Kia Arena.

And it's not been the best start for Andy Murray, who misses a backhand at 0-30 and will face three break points in his opening service game.

The five-time runner-up saves the first two, but he's punished by a Tomas Martin Etcheverry forehand on the third.

It was never going to be straightforward, right?

    G'day from Melbourne!

The heat has ramped up at Melbourne Park today - on and off court.

The conditions on day two have been hotter than they have been in the Australian city over the past week, with outside temperatures reaching 27C.

With a cooling breeze around the grounds, it doesn't as mega hot as it can be. Then again, I'm not playing tennis in direct sunlight.

Daniil Medvedev, who played in the early afternoon, says it was "brutal" having to adjust to the sharp rise in mercury.

  20. Five years on...published at 06:03 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

It is five years since an emotional Andy Murray told media at the 2019 Australian Open that he thought he would soon have to retire.

But here we are, in 2024, and Andy Murray, with metal inserted into his hip joint, is into his 20th season on the ATP Tour.

That the 36-year-old, a former world number one now 44th in the rankings, continues to compete at the level he does defies logic.

But he remains determined to achieve another deep run at a major.

    Can he do that here?
