Ronald Mulder of the Netherlands has a disappointing first run and can only manage the sixth fastest time. They will now have a second race, which starts at 14:55 GMT. The times will then be added together to decide the medallists.

Michel, the first of the Mulder twins - who were born 10 minutes apart - makes an explosive start in his first 500m race, but slots into second, just 0.04 seconds behind compatriot Jan Smeekens. His brother Ronald is up next...

  9. Speed Skatingpublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

Dutchman Jan Smeekens sets a course record with a blistering time of 34.59 seconds in the first race of the men's 500m speed skating.

It's not such good news for Daniel Greig who hits the deck just metres from the start after losing his balance. The Australian, who finished on the podium in this year's World Championships, buries his head as he slides across the ice on his back. With medals being handed out based on aggregate times, his hopes of reaching the podium today are over.

Britain's Charlotte Gilmartin, who also progressed to the 500m quarter-finals along with Elise Christie after finishing second in her heat, added: "It was a tough heat and it was a tough draw on the outside (lane) but I got the job done.

"I knew I had to do some overtaking and I'm been practicing that in training and I've been working sure I've got that nailed. The pressure was on but I got the job done."

  11. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 14:01 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

After winning her 500m short track speed skating heat, Britain's Elise Christie said she has "a lot more speed in me" ahead of Thursday's quarter-finals.

"This is a good chance to warm up and work on those weaknesses in a competition environment because the 500m is not so important to me.," said Christie, who is also competing in the 1,000m and 1,500m. "I'm using this to build into the other two events.

"I had a lot more speed in me, I was being patient and just trying not to get knocked over. I've a lot more in the tank. It's been nice to get here and just get a feel for the environment."

Winter Olympic history could be made in the biathlon later today when sprint gold medallist Ole Einar Bjoerndalen suits up, places his gun over his shoulder and clips into his skis ready for the men's 12.5km.

The 40-year-old will set off first - as he won the sprint on Saturday - in a staggered start and if no more than two athletes overtake him, he will become the first athlete to win 13 Winter Olympic medals - he is currently tied with cross country skier and fellow Norwegian Bjorn Daehlie.

"I'm commuting across to the Extreme Park in the big blue cable car that links the two venues across a yawning chasm. It's men's moguls night and the floodlights are on full beam over the bumps course.

"No Team GB interest but there is British-born Ben Cavet, who is skiing for France. The 20-year-old from Crowborough, Sussex, moved to France aged 10 as his father was a ski instructor in Les Gets.

"Cavet, who took French nationality in 2012, said: 'The top 10 would be my goal. It is a one-day event so anything can happen. We have got lots of training out there before the event so I have got time to be well prepared, do my big jumps and get ready.

"'Hopefully I will make at least two Olympics. In 2018, I'll be at prime age. I look to get some experience in Sochi and then really go for a medal in 2018.'"

Jack Whelbourne, who is dating speed skating team-mate Elise Christie, will be assessed by the medical team before his next event - the men's 1000m on Thursday - after falling in the men's 500m final.

"Unfortunately a block got under my foot and I toed in, which has given me a twisted ankle but we don't know how it is," he said.

"It can be quite common in the sport. The block move, we have seven and up to eight people racing with tight-knit overtakes, so it happens quite a lot.

"This time it happened to me, unfortunately when I was in my best form.

"But I'm really pleased with my performance today, especially setting a new British record in the first round. I'm definitely getting back on the ice, if I can."
