If Sir David's take on curling is not enough to whip you into a frenzy, then allow me to further whet your appetite ahead of Thursday's action. Here's a snapshot of what is happening on day 13 in Sochi....

It seems as though the whole of the UK has been gripped by curling over the past couple of weeks. And now even legendary BBC natural history presenter Sir David Attenborough has been lending his famous tones to a curling commentary at the behest of Radio 1's Greg James. That's when you know it is a cultural phenomenon.

Attenborough describes the objective of curling: "The aim of this ritual is to land your walnut in the centre of the nest."

Have a listen to his curling commentary.

But the headlines today belong to a 40-year-old from Norway.

That is Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. He became the most decorated Winter Olympian in history with 13 medals by helping Norway win gold in the mixed biathlon relay.

It was his second gold medal in Sochi and his eighth in his sixth Games.

  6. Bobsleighpublished at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2014

Canadian duo Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse successfully defended their Olympic crown with a dramatic final run in the women's bobsleigh.

But there was disappointment for Great Britain's Paula Walker and Rebekah Wilson, who could only finish in 12th.

Of course, the beauty of the Olympics are those human interest stories which tend to emerge from the Games. And there was a fitting end to a story of love and adversity as a husband and his wife won Olympic medals within moments of each other., external

Russia's Alena Zavarzina, 24, claimed bronze in the women's snowboarding parallel giant slalom 10 minutes before 27-year-old husband Vic Wild clinched gold in the men's event.

  8. Alpine Skiingpublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2014

A moment of history was created in the alpine skiing as USA's Ted Ligety stormed to his second Olympic gold as he became the first non-European to win the men's giant slalom title.

The 29-year-old world champion, who won the combined in 2006, was quickest after the first run and beat France's Steve Missillier, 29, by 0.48 seconds.

"Sweden skip Niklas Edin panicked and overthrew the shot, they maybe rushed the shot. It was sad to see but it gave us the chance for the two and the opportunity for the win.

"Great Britain face Canada in the final now. They haven't had the best of round- robin games and it will be a difficult game. There is a huge rivalry between the two."

"The guys played really well all the way through, the dynamic between them has been great. They were bossing the game. In the final end, Scott Andrews and Greg Drummond played some poor shots and we thought, oh no!

"But it was a pressure shot for Dave Murdoch, it wasn't straightforward and he drew it in perfectly."

  12. Today at the Gamespublished at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2014

Today at the Games is under way on BBC Two and you can also watch right here on this page. So what has happened at Sochi over the past 20-odd hours?

Our starting point is at the Ice Cube, where it has been another thrilling day in the curling. But it has been bittersweet for Great Britain.

David Murdoch's team reached Friday's men's final with a nail-biting victory over Sweden, guaranteeing Team GB their best medal haul at a Winter Olympics since 1936.

However, their female counterparts - led by Eve Muirhead - lost 6-4 to Canada and must settle for a spot in a bronze medal play-off against Switzerland on Thursday.

"What a sad end for Mao Asada, she plans to retire at the end of the season, but that is not the way she wanted to go out."

Final skater Mao Asada of Japan harbours high hopes of gold - in fact much of the pre-event chat centred around the anticipated battle between her Korea's Yuna Kim. But Asada makes a hash of her routine as she slumps to the ice midway through. She regains composure but her scoring does not recover as she finishes down in 16th. That's well adrift of leader Kim, who goes into Thursday's free program in pole position.

It was not the cakewalk that was expected, but nevertheless Canada have reached the Olympic semi-finals. Shea Weber's goal, just seven minutes from time, proved enough to end the resistance of unfancied Latvia and book a last-four tie for the defending champions against arch-rivals USA.

    Sue Barker
    BBC Sport figure skating commentator

"'Take that,' Adelina Sotnikova will be saying. 'You kept me out of this Olympic Games,' but boy did she take her chance. Now we have a contest at the top of the leaderboard. Yulia Lipnitskaya was taking all the headlines and plaudits, but she did something about it today. The Russian champion, she came here to prove a point."

Liv, external: Sotnikova - that was brilliant! And she's been in the shadow so far with all the talk about Lipnitskaya. What a great skate!

Gilles, external: What a program by Russia in ice skating. The beautiful Adelina Sotnikova truly impressive.

The Russian crowd go completely nuts after the penultimate routine in the women's short programme. Unsurprisingly it was performed by a local lass, who goes by the name of Adelina Sotnikova. It is enough to bother the medal placings, which will be decided on Thursday? Yes it is. Sotnikova climbs into second.

Finally Canada edge ahead! And it is an absolute thunderbolt from Shea Weber which puts them 2-1 ahead against Latvia. With less than seven minutes remaining, I can't see the plucky Latvians coming back in this one.

Meanwhile, Vancouver 2010 silver medallists USA have one foot in the semi-finals. They lead 5-1 against Czech Republic after goals from James Van Riemsdyk, Dustin Brown, David Backes, Zach Parise and Phil Kessel.
