Luge gets an unlikely namecheck in the 1997 film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery when Dr Evil reveals in a therapy session that he had lessons in the sport as a child. “My childhood was typical: summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we’d make meat helmets."

    Skeleton protests

Step aside Black Panther, Great Britain's sliders have new hi-tech suits that have turned them into skeleton superheroes in Pyeongchang.

OK, slight hyperbole, but the fast times posted in training by three of our intrepid heroes - defending champion Lizzy Yarnold, team-mate Laura Deas, and men's slider Dom Parsons - have had the skeleton fraternity asking whether their new attire has played a part.

The Linger brothers, who won silver in Sochi, have retired but Austria still have medal-winning potential in the shape of Peter Penz and Georg Fischler, who have been runner-up to Eggert and Benecken four times this season in regular doubles races. Penz and Fischler, now both in their 30s, have been competing together since 2003 but have only been to one OIympics. They lay third after the first run in Sochi, but had a nightmare second run, ending up 19th and last.

Germany’s Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken are the world champions and are hot favourites for Olympic gold, having finished eighth in Sochi. They’ve been knocking around for a few years but it’s only the last couple of seasons that they have established themselves as the top Germans.

After three silvers at the World Championships (2012, 2013 & 2016), they finally landed gold in 2017. The 2016-17 season, when they collected the world title, was a brilliant one for the German pair. They won nine of the 12 World Cup races, including the leg that doubled as a test event for Pyeongchang. This season they have won all but one of the nine Olympic distance races, winning a second consecutive World Cup title.
