    Men's skiathlon

We've had over 22.5kms of the Men's 30km skiathlon, and it's still Russian Olympic Committee athlete Alexander Bolshunov out in front.

His lead is only growing at the moment!

It's bed time for me, so Thomas Mallows is going to guide you through the closing stages of that one and the rest of this morning's action.

Musgrave was seventh in this race last year.

But what we're seeing is this course, this altitude and these inclines are absolutely brutal.

  3. China's Su Yiming superb at men's slopestylepublished at 07:54 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2022

Qualifying for the men's slopestyle took place a little earlier on.

And 17-year-old Chinese rider Su Yiming stunned the field with a superb first run to top the standings, while several big names struggled on the day.

    Here's how that went down.

    Men's skiathlon

After 18.8kms of the men's skiathlon, Russian Olympic Committee athlete Alexander Bolshunov has the lead from compatriot Denis Spitsov, 37.1 seconds behind, and Finland's Iivo Niskanen at 46.2 seconds back.

It looks like the medals will be decided by those three, with almost a one minute gap to fourth place.

GB's Andrew Musgrave has slipped to 17th.

15km down, 15km to go, and it's time to switch skis as the athletes change from the classic technique to the free technique.

The free technique requires a shorter ski and is faster, but given that it allows the skier to skate from side-to-side, it's more physically demanding.

Andrew Musgrave was 17th at the halfway mark.

With Zoi Sadowski-Synnott (gold) and Tess Coady (bronze) on the podium of the women's slopestyle event, Australia and New Zealand shared a podium at the Olympic Winter Games for the first time. The most recent occasion both New Zealand and Australia finished on the same Olympic Games podium was in the men's sailing 49er event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Worth noting that the Olympic champion from this event in 2018, Norway's Simen Hegstad Kruger, is not here after testing positive for Covid-19.

Four years ago, it was a clean sweep of the podium for the Norwegians, but it's athletes from Finland and the Russian Olympic Committee leading the way as things stand.

  8. Australia fight back against Switzerlandpublished at 07:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2022

    Mixed doubles curling

It's Norway up next for Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat, from 12:05 GMT this afternoon.

Norway have extended their lead over Sweden to 6-2 to boost their own hopes of progressing to the medal matches.

But the standout score at present is Australia's fightback to lead 8-6 against Switzerland as they chase their first win of the Games - having been told only a few hours ago they would be heading home!

That's because Tahli Gill returned a positive PCR test on Saturday - but a medical panel then analysed her results this morning and determined they fell into an acceptable range.

It looks like Italy will remain unbeaten - they lead 7-4 against China - while Czech Republic are on course for victory over Canada, leading 5-3.

Like a train rolling into the station.

Cross-country skiers are among the fittest athletes on the planet, and let me tell you, the speed they go at is quite something.

Unlike me, who is out of breath after legging it to get this photo as they whizzed past.

Andrew Musgrave had a bit of a rough 2021.

After tearing his pectoral muscle earlier in the year, he battled shingles in November, but is back to his best just in time for the Olympics.

“I didn’t feel at the time that shingles set me back, but looking back at it, I had a massive drop off in form after that and the whole first part of the season before Christmas was a bit of a write off.

“But I almost see that as a bit of an advantage, because instead of being in good form and having to maintain it, I’ve got this increase in form and I feel like I’ve been getting stronger and stronger as the weeks go by, so I think it should hopefully make it easier to peak for the Games.

“I definitely feel like I’m as good as I should be.”

    Mixed doubles

The latest round robin matches in the curling mixed doubles are well under way at the National Aquatics Centre.

Australia, who were granted a reprieve after initially being withdrawn because of a positive Covid test, currently trail Switzerland 4-3 going into the fifth end.

Norway lead Sweden 3-2 at the halfway stage, while Canada and the Czech Republic are level at 2-2.

Italy, who have won all their matches so far, look on course for another victory - they lead China 5-1.
