There you have it - dramatic, but for all the wrong reasons. Very low levels of consistency and the opposite of what we saw in the women's.

Errors aplenty for Sweden's Niklas Mattsson, whose head drops after slipping off the first rail.

So there you have it! The headline is Chinese 17-year-old Su Yiming tops the men's slopestyle qualifying.

Defending champion Red Gerard is among those to also make it safely into Monday's final.

Darcy Sharpe has gone. He will be absolutely distraught. 100% he had those finals within his reach. So many runs have dropped here. I don't think I have ever seen that many.

No luck for Canada's Darcy Sharpe.

That leaves Niklas Mattsson as the final man who can deny Japan's Kaito Hamada a place in the men's slopestye final.

Now we have the treat of watching Su Yiming. He has the top spot - he's going to enjoy himself.

There is the argument about snownastics, the spin to win culture and trying to retain the style, but he can absolutely do it, he can spin these huge tricks and retain the style.

Can Otsuka's compatriot Ruki Tobita follow him into the final...

Ah he drops his hand on the final landing and a 56.58 leaves him well short.

No pressure on current leader Yu Siming here, and perhaps unsurprisingly there's no improvement for him here.

It is worth noting these last few riders have been waiting over an hour for this run.

What a run for Takeru Otsuka.

That's how you handle pressure, and we're saying goodbye to Rene Rinnekangas!

Five riders to go. Four are currently outside the qualification places, leaving four riders nervously awaiting their fate.

Takeru Otsuka of Japan drops into his second run... So far so good, into a 1260, and sticks the final landing! Surely that will be enough for him.

It is! 74.93 and into sixth place.

That was shaping up beautifully for Matty Cox. He will have to wait for the Big Air now, that's his chance of a slopestyle medal gone.

Can Australian Matthew Cox sneak into those qualification places?

It's looking good... Oh no! Loses it on the final landing. So close, but that's his challenge over in the slopestyle.

I caught up with Andrew Musgrave last night, and asked him about the freezing conditions here in Zhangjiakou after he tweeted saying it was "one of the coldest places" he'd ever competed.

"I'm coping with it quite well," he told me. "I feel like I'm the sort of person who tackles adverse conditions quite well. If you grew up in Scotland and you're used to going out skiing in the pouring rain and howling gales, then this isn't so bad.

"It's worse for the Scandinavians. They're used to constant -5 and sunny skies.

"The snow is very slow here, but that is because it is so dry and cold, not because it is artificial. All the races this championships are going to be long, hard slogs and it's going to be a war of attrition."

Chris Corning's got a lot of different tricks and he's got the riding skills.

Clean as you like! He looks to the sky - did he do enough on that front section?

There is still so much heat left to drop - so many good riders.

American Chris Corning needs a good run - and he gets it!

He punches the air in delight. Is it enough? It is! 69.30 and into 10th spot.

Rene Rinnekangas now sits 12th, with his 67.10 the current mark.

  15. Musgrave ready for actionpublished at 06:31 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2022

    Men's skiathlon

Andrew Musgrave - at his fourth Olympics - makes his first appearance of these Games in today's 30km skiathlon.

Not familiar with the event? This is a mass start event (70 athletes) in which competitors have to swap technique midway through the race.

The first 15km is competed using the classic technique, where the athletes follow parallel tracks in the snow. At halfway, they change skis and poles to change to the free technique, which is faster and allows them to move their feet from side to side.

Musgrave is seeded 15th. He finishes seventh in this event four years ago in Pyeongchang - the best ever finish by a British athlete in Olympic cross-country skiing.

Coming up at 07:00 GMT, Team GB's Andrew Musgrave takes on the men's skiathlon.

Musgrave finished seventh at Pyeongchang 2018, his best Olympic performance and Britain's best result in the sport.

He told the BBC he needs a "ridiculously good day" to get a medal in Beijing, but "at the same time, there is a possibility".
