Ireland did so well with that final exchange, when there is a lot going on it can get messy. They kept calm and cool and are now into the final.

That's a brilliant run by Team Ireland, who finish second in their heat to make it through to the women's 4x400m relay final.

It was a fine anchor run by Sharlene Mawdesley, who surged from fifth from fifth to second on the home straight to cross the line just behind the Netherlands, with Jamaica convincing winners.

Great Britain's Toby Roberts is now trying to solve the problematic first wall and it's causing him a few problems.

He grabs on to the five point hold for the first time and then skips up the rest of the wall like Spider-Man!

He earns 24.4 points.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson started the day with a 48-point lead over Nafi Thiam.

After the long jump, she leads her rival by 45.

It's still a lead. But the javelin is key - Thiam is so strong in the discipline.

Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson still leads the heptathlon after the long jump.

It's the javelin next at 10:23 BST.

The final event is the 800m at 19:25.

Great Britain's Hamish McArthur is on the second wall and is struggling to complete the final move.

He goes again but slips off the wall and shows his frustration.

McArthur scores 34.6 out of a possible 50 points.

Defending champion, Spain's Alberto Lopez, failed to score a single point on the first wall.

We knew the USA would be clear. The real battle was for the qualifying positions, and with that time I think Belgium may also get through.

That was a little too close for comfort, but Team GB make it through to the women’s 4x400m relay final.

It was brilliant anchor leg from Lina Nielsen, who nudges ahead of France's Amandine Brossier and Helena Ponette of Belgium on the home straight and into second - well behind runaway winners USA.

Brossier responds with a late surge but the dip on the line is enough for Nielsen to see GB through.

The final is on Saturday at 20:14 BST.

No rest for the wicked this morning.

The women's 4x400m relay heats have begun with Team GB in heat one along with USA, who have won the last seven Olympic gold medals in this event.

The top three from each heat qualify for the final.

Nafi Thiam had a real opportunity to pull away and just wasn't able to do it.

Nafi Thiam fails to improve on her second jump, again registering 6.41m.

It means there is just 1cm between the reigning Olympic champion and Katarina Johnson-Thompson going into the javelin (10:23 BST).

Hold onto your hats everyone, this is going to go to the wire.

USA's Colin Duffy, like Hamish McArthur, completed the first wall but the Brit leads the standings.

Frenchman Paul Jenft is really struggling to do the same and he runs out of time.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson can breathe a sigh of relief. It is not a huge jump that she might have been hoping for, but that keeps her in it.

A good solid attempt. She held her nerve to produce a much bigger jump.

She still does not look happy but did well to hold her nerve after her difficult two opening jumps.
