    Ireland did so well with that final exchange, when there is a lot going on it can get messy. They kept calm and cool and are now into the final.

    That's a brilliant run by Team Ireland, who finish second in their heat to make it through to the women's 4x400m relay final.

    It was a fine anchor run by Sharlene Mawdesley, who surged from fifth from fifth to second on the home straight to cross the line just behind the Netherlands, with Jamaica convincing winners.

    After the long jump, she leads her rival by 45.

    It's still a lead. But the javelin is key - Thiam is so strong in the discipline.

    Great Britain's Hamish McArthur is on the second wall and is struggling to complete the final move.

    He goes again but slips off the wall and shows his frustration.

    McArthur scores 34.6 out of a possible 50 points.

    Defending champion, Spain's Alberto Lopez, failed to score a single point on the first wall.

    That was a little too close for comfort, but Team GB make it through to the women’s 4x400m relay final.

    It was brilliant anchor leg from Lina Nielsen, who nudges ahead of France's Amandine Brossier and Helena Ponette of Belgium on the home straight and into second - well behind runaway winners USA.

    Brossier responds with a late surge but the dip on the line is enough for Nielsen to see GB through.

    The final is on Saturday at 20:14 BST.

    The women's 4x400m relay heats have begun with Team GB in heat one along with USA, who have won the last seven Olympic gold medals in this event.

    The top three from each heat qualify for the final.
