'Covid definitely affected my performance'published at 07:36 British Summer Time 9 August

Noah Lyles said he was "proud" to win 200m bronze after being hit by Covid-19 wrecked his bid to become the first man since Usain Bolt to complete an individual Olympic sprint double.

The American, 27, claimed the 100m title by five-thousandths of a second in a historic final on Sunday.

But just four days later he was helped off the track in a wheelchair as Botswana's Letsile Tebogo took the 200m crown, with Lyles having tested positive for the virus early on Tuesday morning.

He kept the positive test result a secret from his rivals and emerged for the final with his trademark exuberance, bouncing onto the track.

But after the race he conceded Covid "definitely affected my performance".

It is a pleasure to get to commentate on all of the field action.

    The javelin yesterday was ridiculous.

In the 200m, Tobogo has been in brilliant form all year. He lost his mum and that would have hit him hard but he was so, so good.

That top three, it was a great race.

  7. Tebogo wins stunning 200m as Covid-hit Lyles deniedpublished at 07:12 British Summer Time 9 August

Botswana's Letsile Tebogo claimed a surprise Olympic 200m gold medal as Noah Lyles was denied a sprint double at Paris 2024.

Tebogo, 21, stormed clear of his rivals to clock an African record of 19.46 seconds and finish ahead of American Kenneth Bednarek, who crossed the line in 19.62.

Lyles, crowned the world's fastest man by five-thousandths of a second in a historically quick 100m final on Sunday night, was unable to compete at the head of the race and matched his Tokyo bronze in 19.70.

It emerged after the race that Lyles had tested positive for Covid and the 27-year-old had to be helped off the track in a wheelchair.

It's just turned 8am in Paris and the swimmers are coming up to the end of their second lap.

It's certainly attracting plenty of attention from the locals. The grandstands are full and plenty of observers are stopping to watch on banks and bridges on their morning commute.

You have to remember, this is one of the few times that anyone is actually allowed to swim in the Seine, so this will be a first for many who are watching.

He has described the opportunity to race at this Olympics as redemption.

After winning a gold and bronze in the pool, Team Ireland's Daniel Wiffen is about to compete in his first ever open water swimming race.

He's admitted he would be as surprised as anyone if he could medal and plans to just "rock up and try to hold on" against swimmers who do this week in, week out.

He even went as far as saying he was just doing it so he could have a swim in the River Seine and get a profile picture in front of the Eiffel Tower.

However, make no mistake about it, now the goggles are on he'll be here to try and add to his medal collection.

He pulled the 'Cold' Palmer pose when walking out, too. He's a confident lad.
