Eilish McColgan didn't think she'd be here. Didn't think she'd become the first Scottish track and field athlete to compete at four Olympic Games.

The 33-year-old was facing the reality of daily discomfort because of a mis-diagnosed knee injury. As recently as March, she was being told by those close to her to write off Paris. At that stage, she was listening.

And yet here the Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion is at the Stade de France.

She might not be in peak form, but only seven women in this field have ever run the distance quicker than she has. A medal seems unlikely, but even being here seemed unlikely for the Dundonian.

McColgan is joined in the field by fellow Scot Megan Keith.

The 22-year-old has only ever run three 10k races, but met the Olympic qualification standard in her first, earned her place in Paris in her second, then won European bronze in her third. Not bad going.

We always try to look at what are the common denominators that allow us to keep producing these great heptathletes and I think honestly, it's inspiration.

Denise Lewis is my inspiration, was my role-model who I looked up to, she has been for Kat and it rolls on.

Hopefully, the giant mural that stands proudly in Liverpool of a hurdling KJT can be updated with an Olympic silver medal.

The Briton exchanges a few laughs with triple champion Nafi Thiam; nothing but congratulations for the 29-year-old Belgian.

In the end, just 36 points separated the pair.

It's gaaaaaame over for the French.

Another cool finish from Sergio Camello seals the deal and he races away to the corner flag where almost the entire Spain bench joins him.

One of the players even ends up in the stands with Spanish fans!

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has been handed a tiara as she soaks up the warm applause from the crowd. And now the whole heptathlon field are celebrating together.

    Women's heptathlon - 800m

    Jazmin Sawyers

I've never seen her so focused on competing and winning. The shotput is the perfect example for me.

Nafissatou throws a huge 15m-plus shot, which should really widen the gap that should put her too far ahead to catch her. So Kat throws half a metre over her personal best in the shot.

    And finally, that'll do it.

With the clock ticking past 120 minutes, France have thrown too many bodies forward, so when goalkeeper Arnau Tenas claims the ball he runs to the edge of the box and launches it towards Sergio Camello on the halfway line.

The Spain substitute races onto it and takes one touch before again dinking it over the France keeper.

Tenas had a shocking start to the game, the way he conceded that opener for France, but he's just ended it with an assist from a throw! Genuinely don't think I've ever seen that before.

A breathless second quarter in the women's hockey gold medal match comes to an end but Netherlands continue to trail China by just one goal.

The reigning Olympic champions put the pressure on China in that quarter, winning penalty corners and even hitting the post but they still couldn't find a way through.

As it stands, China are one to better to cause a shock and better the Olympic silver they took at their home Games in 2008.

    Athletics - men's 4x100m relay final

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former British sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis on the USA men's 4x100m relay team's disqualification:

In the relays anything can happen. You have to put the best team out on the day and it doesn't matter if you have the world's fastest guy or the record holder.

If you go out there, and put a good team out who are drilled in handovers they can achieve the unthinkable. They (USA) will be disappointed.
