Eilish McColgan didn't think she'd be here. Didn't think she'd become the first Scottish track and field athlete to compete at four Olympic Games.
The 33-year-old was facing the reality of daily discomfort because of a mis-diagnosed knee injury. As recently as March, she was being told by those close to her to write off Paris. At that stage, she was listening.
And yet here the Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion is at the Stade de France.
She might not be in peak form, but only seven women in this field have ever run the distance quicker than she has. A medal seems unlikely, but even being here seemed unlikely for the Dundonian.
McColgan is joined in the field by fellow Scot Megan Keith.
The 22-year-old has only ever run three 10k races, but met the Olympic qualification standard in her first, earned her place in Paris in her second, then won European bronze in her third. Not bad going.
