Silver is great but I don't see her settling for that. She's going to run for gold.

It's a big ask. Her personal best is six seconds faster than Nafissatou and she needs eight seconds.

It's a big ask but it's the Olympic Games and it would be her first medal.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson finds herself 121 points behind Nafi Thiam in the fight for gold in Paris, translating roughly to 8.5 seconds.

The Briton's 800m personal best of two minutes 05.63 seconds, set in winning the world title last year, is worth 1,064 points.

Meanwhile two-time reigning champion Thiam has run a lifetime best of 2:11.79, which she set earlier this year, worth 961.

That would, theoretically speaking, give Johnson-Thompson 103 points over Thiam in the finale, meaning the Belgian would take gold by just 18 points.

It is going to be excruciatingly close.

Phew! It's half-time in extra time, with France pushing for an equaliser before the break.

"I know they would have liked to have got a silver or a gold but it's growth. Both the men's and the women's teams have achieved something that we didn't do in 2004 and came home with medals."

French football fans here in the Paris fan park have spent this final alternating between despair and delirium, saying the match has been highly "dramatique".

One of them, Charles, says he's superstitious and "really" nervous. Sure enough, a beautiful fourth Spanish goal floats into the French net not long later.

His Italian companion, Isabella, says there's been a rivalry between her country and the host nation - but she's an honorary France fan tonight.

GB's 400m finalist Amber Anning speaking to BBC One: "I’m absolutely blessed. I am a little bit disappointed. I wanted to come away with three things. It was either a medal, a PB or a national record and I got one of them. I'm just grateful to be in this position with these amazing girls.

"It was tough [the race], I think I let myself have too much work coming into home straight but I just used my strength.

"This was the goal from the beginning, from the indoor season, I said I wanted to be an Olympic finalist and put myself in contention for a medal so I really can't complain. It’s been an amazing experience.

"It’s still not done yet. I've got the relay tomorrow."

There is plenty of orange in the crowd but not much noise from the Dutch fans as they watch they side surprisingly trail.

Four Olympic Games, four very different experiences.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has been through stunning highs and heartbreaking lows since making her global championship debut at London 2012.

While that was a learning experience, Rio 2016 was a missed opportunity.

Then came a devastating Tokyo experience, as injury ended her competition.

But here we are, at Paris 2024, and Johnson-Thompson stands on the brink of not only ending her medal wait - but possibly, just possibly, Olympic gold.

"Can she win gold? Yes she can.

"Will she win gold? It's going to be extremely tough.

"She is a 121 points behind two-time Olympic champion from Belgium Nafissatou Thiam.

"KJT led by 48 points overnight. She would of wanted more from the 200m the other night and her long jump today.

"Basically what has happened is that she's put herself into a situation now where she needs to run 8.5 seconds ahead of Nafissatou Thiam to potentially take the gold off the Belgian."

How close to gold is Katarina Johnson-Thompson?published at 19:15 British Summer Time 9 August

    Heprathlon

    Amy Lofthouse
    BBC Sport in Paris

Katarina Johnson-Thompson will race for Olympic heptathlon gold in the 800m on Friday (19:25 BST) after finishing the morning session in second place, 121 points behind Nafissatou Thiam.

Belgium's Thiam tops the standings with 5,924 points, followed by the Briton with 5,803 and Switzerland's Anna Kaelin on 5,694.

It means Johnson-Thompson will have to run roughly eight seconds quicker than the defending champion to win.

It will be a tough, tough ask for Johnson-Thompson under the lights - she will, ultimately, need the race of her life to claim gold.

There are just 103 points between Johnson-Thompson and Thiam's personal bests in the 800m.

Johnson-Thompson's best time is two minutes 05.63 seconds, while Thiam's is 2:11.79.

That would earn Johnson-Thompson 1,064 points, and Thiam 961.

However, the Briton has given herself a chance, having produced some of her best performances over the past two days.

Spain were utterly dominated in that second half. Can they somehow rally in extra time?

The Spanish are obviously sticking to their passing principles and do have the quality to carve apart the French defence.

Would not put a fiver on which way this game will go.

    Eight and a half seconds.

That is the gap Katarina Johnson-Thompson needs to put between herself and two-time reigning Olympic champion Nafi Thiam for gold.

And she has just two laps of the track to do it.

It is going to require the run of her life to pull it off, but the two-time world champion is, crucially, in with a shout.

The main aim in Paris was to at last end her wait for an Olympic medal of any colour, but her second global triumph in Budapest last year - four years after her first - completely changed expectations.

The 31-year-old will give this everything she has, there is no doubt about that.

    But will it be enough?
