British duet Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe are fourth following their opening technical routine this evening.

Second-last to perform, the Bristol-based pair scored 264.0282 and half a point outside the medal positions.

Afterwards, Shortman told BBC Sport: "We are going to fight to the death. We really want a medal. We are going to put our heart into it and leave it all in the pool."

"The swim felt good," Thorpe added. "It was amazing having a crowd!"

All 18 duets will return tomorrow to each perform a free routine, with medals to be decided by a collective score.

GB’s best finish at an Olympics in the sport was fourth, forty years ago in Los Angeles.

Shortman and Thorpe and Kate have high hopes they can find the routine needed to match their silver medal at the World Championships in Doha earlier this year.

    Theo and Anouk

You won't be surprised to read that this Parisian fan park cleared out pretty quickly after Les Bleus were defeated in the men's gold-medal football match.

For Theo and Anouk, watching on the big screen, the result is a disappointment, but doesn't matter too much in the context of the Games as a whole.

Anouk salutes all the "amazing" medals the host nation has won - including silver in tonight's football match - while Theo is quick to rave about the achievements of swimming hero Léon Marchand.

For Anouk, the Games have proven a good break from France's political issues. After the Olympics, it's "back to war", she jokes.

You can't say it wasn't coming...

Netherlands' pressure finally tells and they get an equaliser with less than 10 minutes remaining in this gold medal match.

China had been resolute in their defence but the Dutch were awarded a penalty corner and they took advantage with Yibbi Yansen sweeping home the goal to make it 1-1.

Will their be a winning goal or could we be heading for a shootout?

Fantastic silver medal aside, seeing Kat visibly enjoying the event and her performances in each discipline, compared to the Kat of old being weighed down by worry, was priceless. The incomparable Nafi usually has everything sewn up for an 800m jog, doubt she's ever been run so close. Awesome, from both.

Netherlands pushed and pushed in that third quarter, taking more penalty corners, shooting wide and forcing the Chinese goalkeeper into important saves, but they still couldn't find an equalising goal.

Not many people would have had China in this position going into the final quarter of the gold medal match but they have put in an impressive display against the world number one nation.

Can they see it out to take a historic gold?
