But the deciding race is re-run and Carlin takes full advantage. Hoogland goes high up the track, ready to swoop down and attack, but Carlin has built up enough of an advantage to cross the line for bronze medal, pending any Dutch protests.

Jack Carlin was taking some very deep breaths as he took his time, slowly riding around the track, to re-focus after that coming together.

He had a brief chat with coach Jason Kenny while a mechanic checked over his bike, before Kenny gave Carlin another push off to give the British rider another lap to get his thoughts together.

    They will restart this race.

USA are favourites to take the men's title in the 4x100m relay final, but they'll have to do it without superstar Noah Lyles.

The 100m champion tested positive for Covid-19 early on Tuesday morning and finished with a bronze medal in the 200m last night.

He later wrote on social: "I believe this will be the end of my 2024 Olympics" after being helped off the track in a wheelchair.

Great Britain are aiming for double success in the relay finals tonight.

The GB quartet qualified third-fastest in yesterday’s heats with a season-best time of 38.04 seconds. The American team - who are world champions but aiming for relay redemption in Paris after missing out on the finals in Tokyo - were the top qualifiers.

Also look out for South Africa, who clocked a second-best time of 37.94.

Reigning Olympic champions Italy scraped through by finishing fifth on Thursday, while world record holders Jamaica will have to watch from the sidelines after failing to secure a spot in the final.
