    Sir Chris Hoy
Six-time Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

Jack Carlin's not stupid he'll have learned from that second ride and it's going to be epic.

I wish the gold medal ride had gone to three because that would have been really exciting.

When it's someone close to you, you want them to do well. This is a really nerve-wracking moment for Jack.

With that kind of top-end speed there's nobody on the planet that can touch Harrie Levreysen.

It was absolutely incredible to watch. When Harrie's on form and he doesn't make mistakes - he is untouchable.

It does feel like the entirety of the Netherlands is in here tonight.

'It's so unpredictable'published at 18:13 British Summer Time 9 August

    Track cycling - women's madison

Olympic silver medallist Neah Evans on BBC One: “We actually stuck to the plan pretty well. It’s really rare for a lap to go and stick. We kind of felt that there’s enough strong teams that we didn't need to be responsible for chasing it. In the moment we made that decision and still raced so well.

"The thing with madison - it’s so unpredictable. Euros we went in as favourites and did the first bit and crashed.

"To come away with a medal is huge because there’s nothing guaranteed with the madison. It’s unorganised chaos. So delighted to get that medal, you’re like if only... but it’s an Olympic silver medal."

Track cycling - men's sprint bronze medal race

    Chris Boardman
Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

That was won by Harrie Levreysen with about a lap-and-a-half to go when he kept his height and dived down the penultimate banking to get the pace advantage.

From that point on he had about 2k an hour over Richardson.

It is gold for Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands as he won his opening two races against Australia's Matthew Richardson to take men's sprint gold in the velodrome.

Lavreysen now has five Olympic Games medals - four golds and one bronze. It is also his second gold of the Games after he was part of the Dutch team that won team sprint gold, while he has also retained the men's sprint title he won in Tokyo in 2021.

Did anyone understand what was going on in the Women's Madison? It looked great fun - but I had no clue what was happening!

    Anon.

The Madison is a great event but it was so much better when laps taken were a separate and higher ranking scoring method rather than just giving more points. There’s now far less incentive for putting in the effort required to lap the field which makes for a far less exciting and more predictable race. Change it back, UCI!

'Every single medal is a huge achievement'published at 18:08 British Summer Time 9 August

    Track cycling - women's madison

Olympic silver medallist Elinor Barker speaking to BBC One: "It’s hard to say, we really, really wanted gold. We came in as world champions which obviously meant we put that pressure on ourselves. We had a target on our back potentially.

"We said it wouldn’t change the way that we raced but it was hard not to feel like we needed to take responsibility for things at times and perhaps that’s what we’ll pick up in our analysis but also I think - an Olympic medal.

"There are plenty of world champions this week that haven’t medalled. I think every single medal is a huge achievement.

"Now this means that every single rider across our squad has got a medal which is awesome so yeah a pretty happy group of people."

Hoogland beats Carlin in race twopublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 9 August

Track cycling - men's sprint bronze medal race

Jeffrey Hoogland takes it to a decider in the men's sprint bronze medal race. He had the edge on the outside as he and Jack Carlin came into the final straight, and the Dutchman powers on and gets the job done, 1-1 so we will have a decider later on.

We have just had a silver medal for Great Britain in the women's madison and Jack Carlin is now aiming for a bronze medal in the men's sprint. He took the opening race against Jeffrey Hoogland and if he does the same in the second race then the bronze is in the bag.

A crowd of French football fans

Hundreds of French supporters have turned out at a fan park in Paris's 13th arrondissement to watch the men's football gold-medal match.

The cheers that went up after that French opener were followed by a sharp inhalation of breath for each of the three quick Spanish goals.

To say the mood of the home faithful is now nervy is an understatement.

"We saw how good Spain were in the Euro 2024 final," says one man, Samuel, ruefully.

    • And it was silver for GB pair Elinor Barker and Neah Evans in the women's madison after a thrilling finish.
    • In athletics, Katarina Johnson-Thompson remains in contention for a medal in the heptathlon, but needs to beat Nafissatou Thiam by around 8.5 seconds in the 800m (19:25) to overtake her for the gold.
    • GB's Max Burgin is into Saturday's men's 800m final but Ben Pattison and Elliot Giles miss out. Cindy Sember failed to finish in the women's 100m hurdles semi-final (see video below).

There was pride. Then there was shock. A bit of annoyance, perhaps.

But, as the first half came to a close, there was hope among the French fans.

The home side knocked heavily on the Spanish door but couldn't find a way through to perhaps plant a bit of doubt in their opponents' minds as they sit in the dressing room.

A few boos from the French - directed at referee Ramon Abatti, I'd guess - as the players go off for a breather.

Boos greeted the free-kick which Alex Baena took. Silence followed when he despatched it.

Like peak Ronaldinho. The PSG fans here saw him casually clip and curl free-kicks in like that.

I do think when they watch it back afterwards was they would have planned it differently to how they rode.

I think their timing was off from the start. I reckon the first change was off.
