You've got to hope the gymnasts don't listen to the arena announcements much - probably not what you want to hear before you get on the pommel horse... "One slight hand misplacement and they are off the apparatus".

The speed, the execution, the circles - they're all on show. Max Whitlock is going well on the pommel horse but can he keep the momentum? Yes he can. Will it be enough to beat the opening score by Nariman Kurbanov of 15.433?

No! The GB gymnast is awarded 15.200 and goes into the silver medal spot.

Gosh, it has gone very quiet at the Bercy Arena. Vault is one of the apparatus where you can roar the gymnasts up the runway - but pommel is the opposite, complete concentration and silence. Quite a contrast.

He will be the second gymnast to perform in this pommel horse final.

    That's that!

Well the United States needed extra time to get it done but they were able to hang on after Trinity Rodman's brilliant strike in the 107th minute.

The United States are going for a fifth Olympic gold medal and a first since London 2012.

Emma Hayes' side will face Canada or Germany, who play later today, in the semi-final.

    Sully: Puncture. Drama. Gold!! Wow.

A day’s worth of cycling and you get a puncture 3.4 kilometres from the finish line, your heart would sink! Evenepoel had done the work, built a lead, so even a flat tyre can’t prevent him from winning gold.

He whittled down the groups and rode away to take gold.

Only at the Olympics would you ever expect to see representatives of North Korea, South Korea and the United States happily sharing a platform – and even giving each other the odd clap.

But that’s what I’ve just seen in the gymnastics arena, where the North came up against its twin adversaries in the women’s vault final.

North Korea’s An Chang-ok briefly led the contest with a confident performance, before being overtaken by Simone Biles and others and narrowly losing out on a bronze.

An applauded her victorious American rival, waved for cameras and even hugged one or two of the other women – rare interactions with the outside world by an athlete likely to be carefully chaperoned in Paris.

Moments like these – and the table tennis selfie taken by athletes from the North and South earlier in the week – are what experts like to call “sporting diplomacy”.

Journalist Jean H Lee, the host of BBC podcast The Lazarus Heist, told me it was “remarkable” to see North Koreans return to the global stage after the country’s particularly pronounced period of isolation and animosity with the South.

The secretive state sealed itself off during the pandemic and was not represented at the Games in Tokyo in 2021.
