Great Britain's Abbie Wood missed out on a medal in this event in Tokyo by just 11th hundredths of a second.

Can she snatch one tonight? She's got some stiff competition in the final, including 17-year-old Summer McIntosh, who has two golds and a silver already in Paris, and silver and bronze medallists last time out Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass.

The women's 200m medley final, which includes Team GB's Abbie Wood, will be eye-catching.

Canada's McIntosh, Australia's three-time Olympic champion Kaylee McKeown and Americans Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh were supposed to go head-to-head in a final billed as one for the ages at 2023's World Championships, only for McIntosh to pull out to focus on other events and McKeown to be disqualified in the semi-final.

Barring any more unexpected twists, the swimming world will get what it wanted 12 months on in Paris.

Half a second separates their respective best times in recent years.

Throw in the rivalry between the Australian and American teams - last year Aussie swimmer Cate Campbell ramped up the noise by calling the Americans "sore losers" - and this really should be one to watch.

What a performance for Great Britain. They ran a new national record.

Lewis Richardson, the last man standing of Team GB.

He lives to fight another day.

It's so important for Lewis Richardson, he is embracing who I assume are family members at ringside, and for the team.

They are a team, they all train together in Sheffield. Not just the fighters themselves, the backroom staff, the coaches, the medical people.

They were really concerned here when they saw five Team GB boxers all lose their first bout in the ring. It was in danger of being a whitewash.

Step forward Lewis Richardson to salvage some pride and he is going to be in the medal hunt at Roland Garros.

Great Britain hold on for bronze!

Amber Anning does just enough to secure a medal, but what a run that is from Dutchwoman Femke Bol.

Bol charges down the last 100m to overtake the United States' Kaylyn Brown right at the finish line.

Gold goes to the Netherlands, while the Americans have to settle for silver.

The US team set a world record in the heats, but the crowd support will be firmly with the French team, who start in lane six.

Team GB is made up of Samuel Reardon, Laviai Nielsen, Alex Haydock-Wilson and Amber Anning. They set off in lane eight.

The rain appears to have eased slightly as the athletes are welcomed back out to the track, shortly after shot put champion Ryan Crouser receives the crowd's appreciation.

The cheers grow even louder as the French relay time head out into the stadium.

The USA set a world record in qualifying, the Netherlands have called upon Femke Bol for the final, but can Team GB get themselves in medal contention?

It's over to Samuel Reardon, Laviai Nielsen, Alex Haydock-Wilson and then Amber Anning.

  12. What has happened so far on day eight?published at 19:57 British Summer Time 3 August

    • Simone Biles claimed her third gold medal in Paris, winning the vault finalin emphatic fashion.
    • There was disappointment for Max Whitlock, who failed to win a medal in the pommel horse final for the fourth successive Games. That event was won by Rhys McClenaghan, who is from Northern Ireland. See video above.
    • Team GB's Jake Jarman took bronze in the men's floor final to win nation's first artistic gymnastics medal of the Paris Olympics. Team-mate and double European champion Luke Whitehouse came sixth.

'Richardson got over the line'published at 19:55 British Summer Time 3 August

    Boxing - men's 71kg

Lewis Richardson is going through to the semi-final.

Zeyad Eashash tried everything, he did his absolute best from the first bell until the last seconds of that nine minute contest.

Richardson won the first two rounds and he got over the line but the last one was tighter, harder and more gruelling.

It's a dream that Richardson almost gave up on, out of the ring for 366 days. Had to self-fund to go to a tournament in Portugal last November to get experience at this new weight.

This is a fantasy story. This is his 125th contest tonight, that's a good British story. We're into the semi-finals!

The freestyle is absolutely the splashiest of the events in the pool, I reckon.

There is a lot of American support in the crowd tonight, particularly for Gretchen Walsh, who already has two silvers under her belt here in Paris.

It's unlucky for Anna Hopkin, though, who just misses out on a spot in the final. She finishes 10th overall, with only the top eight advancing.

Dina Asher-Smith made a significant coaching change, a lifestyle change. She has moved from Kent to America to be able to train and be with the best people in the world.

The woman who is leading this, Julien Alfred is Dina's training partner. They are stride for stride.

I speak to Dina on a regular basis, I know what kind of shape she is in so she will be wondering what went wrong today.

That is one of her slowest times this season, she will be absolutely devastated to put out a performance like that at an Olympic Games at a semi-final. That's not her and we know it's not.

She is an experienced performer, this is her third Olympic Games.
