Another vote for gymnastics. 6 (or 4) very different events to master, and even the basics are essentially impossible for the average person. My 9yo son competes at a decent level and he's been doing things I can't do, have never been able to do, and probably would never be able to do, since he was 6 or 7 🤯

With two defeats from their opening two matches in Paris, this morning's match against South Africa is a crucial one for Great Britain.

Only the top four from each group of six progress, and GB are currently bottom of their group on goal difference. While a win is not imperative with two matches still to come after this one, they will be hoping to carve out all three points to relieve a bit of pressure.

South Africa - who are also without a win so far - are the first to emerge to warm up, and start by gathering in a circle and singing together. It was honestly so lovely to watch and listen to (even if the tannoy was blaring out at the same time!).

Without doubt all Olympic sports are tough for the amateur. I have no doubts the two I'd be worst at by far would the the marathon and 10k open water swim.

It’s not equestrian, people who are aged 50+ do equestrian. Decathlon a better shout, gymnastics defo, but equestrian is waaaaaaaay down the list.

Good morning from Yves-du-Manoir, where it's an important morning for Team GB's women's hockey team as they face South Africa in their third pool match of the Olympics at 09:30 BST.

This venue was the main arena the last time Paris hosted the Olympics, 100 years ago.

Since then, it has hosted some 250 national and international competitions across athletics, football, rugby and boxing, and its history is plastered all over the fences on the road from the local train station.

...and the final bit of the walk to the venue takes you along this road, Boulevard Pierre de Coubertin, named after the founder of the modern Olympic Games. The 1924 Olympics, held here in the city of his birth, were his final Games as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Tough start for Team GB's Liam Pitchford in the men's table tennis as he trails against Slovenia's Darko Jorgic.

Jorgic has just taken the second set but there's still a long way to go for Pitchford to claw himself back into this match.

Remember, you can this over on BBC iPlayer and the Red Button.

'Super happy to come away with the bronze'published at 09:15 British Summer Time 31 July

    Women's triathlon

Beth Potter speaking to BBC TV after securing bronze for Team GB in the women's triathlon: "I'm so happy, I was going for the gold but Cassandre and Julie were just too good for me today but I'm super happy to come away with the bronze. I've come a long way in eight years and I am so happy to be here with a bronze medal.

On winning the bronze medal: "I did it for me but I also did it for everyone who has helped me in eight years and believed in me from day one. It is for them back home as well."

On going until the very end in a pack of four: "I dug deep and found something else."

On the race: "I just tried to stay in the top five and stay towards the front and mainly stayed out of trouble. I got caught behind a couple of crashes on the bike but managed to stay upright. I was just trying to stay sensible and not get caught."

On the conditions during cycling: "It said it was going to be dry but it was obviously very wet. I live and train in Leeds so I am used to those conditions and I have done many sessions with the boys in the wet. I was prepared and I didn't want to make any silly mistakes and I made sure I stayed on good wheels and tried to stay as safe as possible."

On the men's upcoming race: "I will root for my fellow GB athletes so hopefully Alex [Yee] takes the win today."

When she walked off the track in Rio in 2014, sore and disconsolate and feeling like a bag of washing, this is was Beth Potter wanted.

Now, after eight years of graft, an Olympic medal is hers after swapping athletics for triathlon.

Perseverance, belligerence, stubbornness… give it whatever label you want. But the nuggety Glaswegian wasn’t leaving central Paris today without what she came for - a slab of metal for her and the second won by a Scottish athlete at these Games.

It's bronze for Beth Potter after a brilliant, brutal race. A superb effort from the Briton.

Stunning from Cassandre Beaugrand to take the gold in her home city. The Frenchwoman finally shows signs of tiredness in the last metres but crosses the line in 1:54:55.

Switzerland's Julie Derron claims the silver medal.

All three collapse to the floor after crossing the line. What a race.

Not one of them will want to let off now. You’re trying to read the faces. Beth Potter is making it hard, she’s the outside bet, no one thought she would get close to the podium but she’s having the run of her life.

One of them is going to find it difficult as they get to the last lap of the run.

We know Beth Potter is incredibly strong as she goes through the 10K.

Julie Derron is having an absolutely blinding race. She is someone who is just taking the opportunity at the front of the Olympic Games and she is literally running with it.

I think she is someone running on pure heart right now, not sure if she has quite got the legs to keep up with the other three but we'll see.

Four athletes. Three medals. What a scrap this is going to be over the final two run laps!

With two French athletes in contention for gold - and at least one podium place appearing likely - the excitement is growing among the home crowds.

The cheering has barely stopped, especially now with athletes strung out around the course, but it's easy to tell when the leaders are approaching. What a noise!
