    OMG!

France have been denied gold in the most dramatic circumstances - an outrageous two-pointer in sudden-death.

The Netherlands win 18-17 as Worthy de Jong beats the buzzer. He stands motionless for a second before his team-mates mob and bury him.

The hosts, who would have climbed an over Australia into third in the Paris 2024 medal table, must settle for silver.

The French fans have been bang up for this Olympics.

Wherever they’ve been in the gold-medal hunt - from the Dupont-inspired rugby sevens, through to Marchand in the pool, Beaugrand in the Seine and Riner on the judo mat - the place has been rocking.

No different at La Concorde tonight.

Throaty chants of ‘Allez Les Bleus’ are omnipresent. Daft Punk blasts out of the speakers.

One fella is dressed as the Olympic mascot Phyrge. He must be sweating.

And not least because the Dutch are leading 10-8 just after the halfway point.

'I knew that today I had to go one better than I ever had'published at 21:39 British Summer Time 5 August

    Athletics - women's 800m final

More from Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson speaking to BBC TV after women's 800m gold: "I had a little cheeky look up to the screen to make sure but you can't do anything until you have crossed the line and it is cemented. I am now the Olympic champion for the next four years and no one can take that away from me. I just can't believe it."

On being confident in the build up: "Yes I have really grown over the last couple of years and this year was the year where you could really tell that I had tried to make that step up.

"The rest of the girls are incredible but I knew that today I had to go one better than I ever had. I feel like I have and there is more there and I am so pleased to do it today. The future is bright."

On support everywhere: "I have seen all the support from home and people messaging me. I've not got back to everyone yet, I will do. I have seen it all and it couldn't feel more amazing to have that support. I am just so happy I can bring that home for me and my team.

"It is not just me, my people know who they are, it is a whole team effort. This is our gold medal."

The German players gather in a huddle - and bounce!

They’ve won gold in the women’s event after a late rally to beat Spain 17-16 in a tense final.

Sonja Greinacher bags a late two-pointer to tip the balance in the Germans’ favour.

Spain led for a large part of the contest but have to settle for silver.

Moments later, the volume on the sound system gets ramped up for French rock god Johnny Hallyday.

Why? To whip up the crowd before France go for gold in the men’s event next.

Athletics - men's pole vault final

    Dame Denise Lewis
Sydney 2000 Olympic heptathlon gold medallist on BBC TV

Mondo Duplantis probably would have cited this.

He has taken the pole vault community to new heights. You can see that they are a band of brothers, they are all willing him on. This place was rocking.

They were chanting 'Mondo! Mondo!' because they just know this is the best they have ever seen.

It has been sensational to watch him clear that.

We have been waiting for a little while for him to get that new world record.
