Athletics - men's pole vault final

Armand Duplantis holds off his gold medal celebrations until he's set a new Olympic record.

    It was inevitable.

The Swede, who is now a two-time Olympic champion, flies well clear of 6.10m - that's 7cm further than Brazilian Thiago Braz's previous record at Rio 2016.

And, he's not stopping there, Duplantis is going bigger!

Keely Hodgkinson was ready for it, she had to race smart. She didn't shake her opponents until the very end.

It was so tense, but she delivered, she ran the race that suited her and ended up taking it by the scruff of the neck because she knew she had to.

The silver queen has stepped up to gold and she so deserves it. Keely Hodgkinson ran that race with the weight of expectation on her, everyone was hanging that medal around her neck, she knew that as well.

But to execute it in that way and to block someone of the tactical level of Mary Moraa, who can really mix it up, she was just so impressive. She held it off and when the gap appeared she put her foot to the floor.

Gold for Keely, gold for Great Britain, gold for being brilliant. A tougher race than she might have expected but she is so good and so much better than everyone else that even when the pressure and the challenge came she stood up to it and moved away.

So much hype, so much expectation but not an ounce of concern or worry on the face of the Atherton-born runner.

Hodgkinson was pushed by Kenya's Mary Moraa on the home straight but she had extra gears.

But Duplantis isn't finished yet. The Swede is chasing that Olympic record of 6.03m.

    Keely Hodgkinson and Kelly Holmes

I had the honour of being present when Keely Hodgkinson met up with double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes for a chat in Manchester before these Games, as they talked through the 22-year-old's journey to this point.

This point being the brink of Olympic gold.

There was no hesitation in Hodgkinson's reply when, after discussing her near-misses at successive World Championships since achieving Tokyo silver on her Games debut, Holmes asked what the aim was for Paris.

"To win," was Hodgkinson's immediate response.

Hodgkinson is still only 22 and so it is certainly not a case of now or never.

But, after coming so close to global gold on three occasions in as many years, and arriving here as by far the quickest in the world this year, it does feel like this is her moment.
