Dina Asher-Smith ran a beautiful bend. It was going to be tough having Gabby Thomas on the outside of her.

Thomas just moved so smoothly into another great and just ran away from Dina.

The game face wasn't really there, she sort of showed us all how she felt about that race, she wasn't happy.

Good to see that Dina [Asher-Smith] has made that final. She attacked the bend very well, she is a really good bend runner, but Gabby Thomas matched her as she went around the bend and did a beautiful set of acceleration strides to ease away.

Spain come from behind to beat Moroccopublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 5 August

    Men: Morocco 1-2 Spain

Morocco suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the first semi-final of the men's football tournament.

Soufiane Rahimi put the Moroccans ahead with a 37th minute penalty, before Fermin Lopez levelled midway through the second half.

Spain then crushed the dreams of the North African side as Sevilla's Juanlu Sanchez netted with five minutes remaining.

They will now progress to Friday's final in Paris, where they will face the winner's of the second semi between Egypt and France (20:00 BST).

Morocco will play the losers of that tie in the bronze medal match in Nantes on Thursday.

    Wow!

It's Team GB's Dina Asher-Smith and USA's Gaby Thomas battling it out as they come out of the bend but there's only one winner with Thomas pulling well clear in the last 100m.

A time of 21.86 seconds sees Thomas improve on yesterday's round one run and a spot in the final is secured.

Asher-Smith will also be in that final after claiming second.

Team GB's Dina Asher-Smith is among the nine lining up for the second semi-final.

American Gabby Thomas won her round one heat yesterday with relative ease and will be looking to kick on from that time of 22.20 seconds.

It's also worth noting that Thomas is the quickest woman in the world over this distance in 2024.

The Olympics is all about humans pushing themselves to the limit.

Physically and mentally overcoming adversity as they look to maximise their talent.

We can all relate to that, right?

So, I loved this medal board near the Seine which asks the Olympic flaneurs - ‘What’s the hardest challenge you’ve overcome?’.

Answers from various language have been written down and ones in English include ‘Beating my insecurities’ and ‘Learning German’.

Julien Alfred has had a huge step up this year. When we saw what she did in the Diamond League in London, pushing Gabby Thomas all the way, we knew she was going to have a hgue Olympic Games.

Now for her it is about holding the title of Olympic champion. When she got to the 150 metre mark she was level with Favour Ofili, so she just stepped on a bit more power to pull away and she did it so easily and the race was done.

You wouldn't bet against Julien Alfred to win the 100m and 200m double.

She ran the bend beautifully, leaning in to the bend and looking like a plane about to take off.

There will be a new champion this year. There is a real opportunity that she could do the double, just like Elaine Thompson-Herah.

    Women's 200m semi-finals (19:45 BST)

Great Britain's Daryll Neita, Dina Asher-Smith and Bianca Williams reached the semi-finals of the women's 200m at Paris 2024, after world champion Shericka Jackson withdrew.

Neita finished an agonising four-hundredths of a second off the 100m podium in fourth on Saturday, as St Lucia's Julien Alfred won gold.

The 27-year-old was a clear winner on her return to the Stade de France track, clocking 22.39 seconds.

Asher-Smith, bitterly disappointed not to make the 100m final, ran 22.28 for second in her heat behind Nigeria's Favour Ofili, while team-mate Williams qualified in 22.77.

An emotional Asher-Smith told BBC Sport: "I'm just angry from yesterday to be honest. I was angry but coming down the home straight I was like 'relax, relax'.

Team GB's Bianca Williams runs a season best of 22.58 seconds but is fourth.

Big news. Ciara Mageean, the Team Ireland athlete who won the 1500m European title earlier this summer, is out of the Olympics.

Her withdrawal was announced on the eve of her scheduled participation in Tuesday's women's 1500m heats.

A statement released by Team Ireland on Monday said Mageean was suffering from "painful chronic Achilles issues" in the build up to the Games.

The 32-year-old from Northern Ireland said: “I’m absolutely heartbroken not to be able to compete in my third Olympic Games.

"I gave it everything to make it possible to be on the start line, but time was against me. I want to thank everyone for all their support.”

I think the top two Julien Alfred and Gabby Thomas are too far ahead of the rest of the world at this distance, but there could be a right battle going on for the bronze medal.

I have been looking at the two semi-final lineups and they are quite evenly weighted, normally one is more highly contested than the other but that is not the case here.

All of the runners will be looking for a place in the final and perhaps the opportunity to sneak a bronze medal.

Noah Lyles ambled out of the blocks, took a very easy, steady bend. He does it over a slow easy period, added a little more power in the stride and that was all that was neccessary to pull away from the rest. He's got so much speed at the moment.

Lyles had time to check over both shoulders before taking his foot off the gas to finish in a time of 20.19 seconds.

Canada's Andre de Grasse was made to work in the last 20m but did enough to claim second with Japan's Towa Uzawa in third.

It is so important for the whole team to get off to a good start to the campaign. Time and time again we have seen the British team come to the velodrome on the first day and stamp their authority on things.

We have now had a gold, two second places in qualifying in the first round of the men's team pursuit and the team sprint. Not quite the perfect start but the first gold medal going to Great Britain, what a way to kick things off.
