A world record by a hundredth of a second.

Team GB will ride for the gold, silver at worst.

We did say that we would see world records come tumbling down and I wouldn't be surprised if we see them tumble even further.

    Here he comes!

Swedish star Mondo Duplantis walks out on to the track to huge cheers before the start of the men's pole vault final.

In the era of Duplantis, gold in the men's pole vault appears a formality and the focus is instead on the world record.

It is a case of when, not if, the 24-year-old will next break it.

Duplantis has already won every prize available to him and improved his mark for the eighth time in April by clearing 6.24m.

It won't be long before he's able to clear Usain Bolt stood on a giraffe's head...

Armand Duplantis' pole vault world record is 6.24m

Katy Marchant - an individual bronze medallist from Rio - was the sole female sprinter in Team GB’s squad in Tokyo, finishing sixth.

She’s now guaranteed another Olympic medal, and at least silver, alongside her team-mates Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell. Behind them, there’s a whole host of female sprinters coming up through the British ranks.

A lot can happen in three years, and Marchant even took time out after Tokyo to have her little boy, Arthur.

He’s here in the velodrome with the rest of ‘Team Marchant’, sat just in front of me, and looking very excited!

Really nice touch after a devastating loss as Great Britain do a lap of the pitch, applauding the British fans who have come out to watch them.

They look absolutely gutted, but there's no shame in losing to a side as strong and as all-conquering as the Netherlands.

Three teams producing 45.3 seconds, the world record broken three time in the space of about ten minutes. That is what you call rising to the occasion!

It was Finucane's turn really that brought that one home for Team GB and now they are guaranteed a medal.

    Stade de France

    Yep, it’s still perfectly purple!

But it hasn’t been the best day so far for Team GB at Stade de France.

This morning, Zharnel Hughes announced his withdrawal from the men’s 200m, which starts this evening, after missing out on Sunday night’s spectacular 100m final.

In the morning session, gold medal hope Molly Caudery suffered heartbreak as she failed to qualify for the women’s pole vault final, while team-mate Holly Bradshaw was left in tears after also missing out.

But there was good news in the women’s 400m as Amber Anning and Laviai Nielsen sealed progress - and hopefully more to come on Monday.

All eyes, certainly from a British perspective, are on Keely Hodgkinson as she aims to end her wait for global gold, while Daryl Neita, Dina Asher-Smith and Bianca Williams will attempt to reach the women’s 200m final.

And we could even be treated to world record performances.

Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis is no stranger to such achievements, while the women’s 5,000m features distance running heavyweights Faith Kipyegon, Sifan Hassan and Guday Tsegay.

    Hockey women's quarter-finals: GB 1-3 Netherlands

    Helen Richardson-Walsh MBE
Olympic gold medal winning hockey player on BBC Radio 5 Live

Team GB have played pretty well, just the first minute of the game and the last minute of the first quarter and the first minute of the last quarter they have conceded goals.

Maybe just not being quite ready when they have needed to be and seeing out quarters is really key in those big moments, big games.

Coming in to it, their form wasn't great, they didn't have many results going their way.

    Devastated for the team.

I think Great Britain were in it in that first half and that second goal killed their progress.

That early defeat to Spain was their undoing in game one means they finished fourth, and had to play the Dutch.

    Hockey women's quarter-finals: GB 1-3 Netherlands

Great Britain's women have taken home a medal from each of the past three Olympic Games but it's not to be this time as they exit in the quarter-finals.

After a mixed pool stage, where they finished fourth after winning two and losing three, they came up short against a Netherlands team who were always expected to be tough to crack.

The Netherlands are the top-ranked side and went through the pool stage unbeaten.

Scoring inside a minute really set the tone and, despite Hannah French netting an equaliser in the second quarter, the Netherlands were able to find another gear to prevail 3-1.
