    Ahhh that's a real shame!

Great Britain's Hamish McArthur has got off to a really good start here but he can't quite make his fingertip hold on the second zone of the final problem count.

Points are awarded for control and the 22-year-old just didn't quite have the balance to keep hold of it and make the points count.

Even so, he sits top of the standings after the first round of climbers with scores of 9.9, 10, 9.3 and 5.

He scored 9.9 on the first problem and 10 on the second. He's back out to have a go at number three.

What makes this event super exciting is that the climbers are each taking on problems at the same time. So we currently have four climbers out taking on one of the problems each.

How does bouldering work?published at 09:35 British Summer Time 5 August

    Men's boulder and lead semi-final

    Jess Anderson
    BBC Sport in Paris

So, the boulder event. Here's how it all works.

Climbers attempt to climb four different boulders, or problems, one at a time in as few attempts at possible. They have five minutes to assess the problem and try to scale the boulder and can have as many attempts as they like within that allotted time.

The problems vary in difficulty with different overhangs and small holds which can often only be held onto by the fingertips.

A maximum of 100 points can be scored here with up to 25 points available per problem.

Athletes score five points for reaching the first zone, 10 for the second and a full 25 for the top spot. But climbers must show that they have controlled the move.

Scores here will then be added to scores from the lead event - which takes place on Wednesday - with the top eight reaching the final.

Brazil’s 2022 world champion Alison dos Santos looks back to his best after an injury-hit 2023.

He laps up the adoration of the crowd before his heat and surges well clear of the pack early on, but slows up before the line so only qualifies in third behind Rasmus Magi of Estonia and CJ Allen of USA.

The fourth heat sees Jamaica's Roshawn Clarke, Nigeria's Nathaniel Ezekiel and France's Wilfried Happio make it through.

The fifth and final heat, featuring Team GB's Alastair Chalmers, is coming right up.

    Men's sport climbing semi-final

    Jess Anderson
    BBC Sport

Bonjour from Le Bourget, where it's day one of the sport climbing event.

To get things started we have the men's boulder and lead semi-finals before the women's speed climbing qualification later.

We begin with the boulder segment of the competition today, which essentially involves trying to complete a 4.5m high route with no rope.

That may sound easy, but the overhangs and the placement of the foot and hand holds makes this very difficult. On the below photo, it's the right-hand wall that the climbers are looking to scale. They have five minutes to get as far up each problem as possible.

The upper body strength required to haul yourself up the wall is a sight to behold.

Two British men are looking to get their campaign off to a solid start and reach Friday's final - Toby Roberts and Hamish McArthur.

British Triathlon performance director Mike Cavendish: "We thought it was sliver, the display showed it was silver. The judges will look at a video still, that isn't great to go off. When it's come to the official photo finish, America were just ahead of us.

"It's very rare that it goes to a photo finish. I'm still so proud they got a bronze, it's just a brilliant advert for our sport."

On whether they will appeal the result: "[No] I've seen the photo, when you zoom in, it's relatively clear."

On finishing third: "We didn't come into the race as favourites, we were probably third favourites. America have muscled there way in, we can't be disappointed with a bronze."
