    Highlights

Two-time Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones is hunting a third gold medal from 08:10, with the gold-medal contest at 20:39. Jones won in London and Rio but suffered a shock early exit in Tokyo. Her build-up to Paris has not been perfect, not least a doping case where she avoided a ban over a refused test because of “very exceptional circumstances”. No taekwondo athlete has won three Olympic golds.

World champion Bradly Sinden will be looking to upgrade his Tokyo silver in the men’s taekwondo’s -68kg category.

In the athletics, GB's Katarina Johnson-Thompson begins her heptathlon quest at 09:05 with the 100m hurdles.

Later, US sprint sensation Noah Lyles will headline the evening session as he goes in the men's 200m final at 19:30.

Jack Laugher is back in the men’s diving 3m springboard. The final starts at 14:00. Laugher has silver and bronze in this event from the past two Olympics.

In the velodrome, GB’s Ollie Wood and Ethan Hayter both have the experience needed to contend for a medal in the men’s omnium, with Hayter winning the world title in 2021 and 2022. France’s Benjamin Thomas also has multiple world titles to his name and will be targeting this event, which runs over four events starting at 16:00. The women’s keirin could feature double European silver medallist Emma Finucane for GB (from 16:18).

The men’s hockey final takes place at 18:00 between Germany and the Netherlands.

Park Tae-joon sealed gold for South Korea in the men's -58kg category with victory against Azerbaijan's Gashim Magomedov, who had to withdraw due to injury in round two.

The 20-year-old, who is the reigning world champion in the lighter -54kg class, beat Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Jang Jun to book his spot in Paris and he made full use of his opportunity.

Tunisia's Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi and France's Cyrian Ravet won bronze medals. In the women's -49kg weight class, Thailand's Panipak Wongpattanakit beat China's Guo Qing 2-1 in an enthralling encounter.

Wongpattanakit, who won bronze in in 2016 and gold in 2020, won the opening round but Guo struck back to take the second.

After two successful video appeals, Wongpattanakit claimed the third to defend her title. The bronze medals went to Croatia's Lena Stojkovic and Mobina Nematzadeh of Iran.

The women's 400m hurdles final on Thursday promises to be incredible when Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and world champion Femke Bol go head-to-head at the Stade de France.

But the men's race is certainly not one to miss either.

The event's three current heavyweights are world record holder Karsten Warholm, American Rai Benjamin and Brazil's Alison Dos Santos.

They are the only three men to run under 47 seconds this year and the trio will line up in the final having made it through tonight's semi-finals.

The reallocated team figure skating medals from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics were finally handed out in Paris on Wednesday at the end of a lengthy doping saga.

Skaters from the United States and Japan were given their medals after Russia were dropped from gold to bronze following Kamila Valieva's four-year ban for doping.

Canada were left fourth after failing in an appeal to be promoted to third. The USA were awarded gold, with Japan promoted to silver.

The Russian Olympic Committee was not represented at the ceremony because of its ongoing suspension by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The IOC decided to wait until Valieva's case had been resolved before handing out the long-awaited medals, with the legal battle leaving the outcome uncertain for two and a half years.

    Athletics - men's 400m final

A few more thoughts from Matt Hudson-Smith, speaking to the BBC, following his silver medal in the men's 400m final.

On the race: "I set up exactly the way my coach told me to. We knew it was going to come down to the last 50 metres. I genuinely thought I had it. He had another gear. I hit the gear a little bit too late and as it came up he had one step on me and that's it.

"It is just the start really. Time to build. I'm healthy. My time is going to come, it is only a matter of time."

On whether he knew Quincy Hall was closing in on him:"No. I thought I cleared the field and I kept trying to speed up because I knew someone was going to come. I didn't know who.

"I wasn't trying to ease up this time, I was trying to run for the line. He got me on the line but it happens."

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting secured a place in Saturday’s featherweight Olympic final amid the ongoing controversy over her eligibility.

Lin and welterweight Imane Khelif are competing in Paris despite being disqualified from last year's World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after reportedly failing gender eligibility tests.

Khelif secured her place in her division’s final on Tuesday and Lin, 28, followed with another comprehensive, unanimous decision victory as she overcame Turkey’s Esra Yildiz Kahraman.

Afterwards in the Turkish 27-year-old made the same "X" sign with two fingers as Lin's previous opponent Svetlana Staneva. It came after Kahraman held the ropes open for Lin to exit the ring.

She then returned to the centre and made the "X" symbol with two of her fingers, turning around to present it to all areas of the crowd. Staneva's "X" was reportedly said to have symbolised female XX chromosomes.

Afterwards Kahraman did not speak to the media so BBC Sport could not ask her the meaning of the gesture.

Lin will meet Tokyo silver medallist Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines or 20-year-old Pole Julia Atena Szeremeta in the biggest bout of her career on Saturday night.

She cleared 4.85, beating Canada's Alysha Newman into bronze on countback.

Alekna was just three centimetres back with 69.97. Australia's Matthew Denny claimed bronze (69.31m).

Stona, 25, is an interesting character. He's 6ft 7in and has had try-outs with NFL sides the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints.

He also does shot put and is coached by Ryan Crouser, the three-time Olympic shot put champion from the United States, who won gold earlier in the Paris Games.

    43.18 - Michael Johnson - 1999

    43.29 - Butch Reynolds - 1964

    43.40 - Quincy Hall - 2024

    43.44 - Matthew Hudson-Smith - 2024
