This may be called a race walk, but these athletes are racing along quicker than many people run.

Christopher Linke of Germany leads the pack at the first changeover, clocking 43:32.

He is closely followed by Spain's Alvaro Martin, Japan's Masatora Kawano, Brazil's Caio Bonfim and Ecuador's Daniel Pintado, who have broken away from the rest of the pack.

Like so many events at these Games, the backdrop is spectacular. The course is inspired by the Women’s March on Versailles of 1789, a key event in the French Revolution, taking in the Grand Palais, Louvre, Palace of Versailles and Eiffel Tower.

Team GB boxer Lewis Richardson will take home a bronze medal from the Paris Olympics after an agonising semi-final defeat by Mexico's Marco Verde.

Richardson, the last British boxer standing in Paris, looked to have done enough to secure a place in Friday's final but lost on split decision.

He was up on two of the judge's scorecards before the final round, down on one and level on the other two, but the panel of five all gave the last in favour of the Mexican to give him a 3-2 win.

"I thought Lewis had done enough in that last round to win," BBC boxing expert Steve Bunce said.

Team GB's Sky Brown overcame a shoulder injury to claim Olympic bronze in a thrilling women's skateboarding park final in Paris.

Brown, 16, was seen clutching the left shoulder she dislocated last week after a heavy fall during Tuesday's preliminary round.

But a sensational final run of 92.31 ensured she added to the bronze she collected in Tokyo, when she became GB's youngest medallist aged 13 years and 28 days.

"I feel like this made my story," Brown said.

"I felt the adrenaline and was just hyped up. I didn't even think about it."

Action from the women's 20km race walkImage source, Getty Images

The marathon race walk is new event that was unveiled in April last year. It replaces the individual 50km in order to ensure gender parity across the entire athletics programme for the first time at an Olympics.

The relay will feature 25 teams, each comprising one male and one female athlete. Each athlete will complete two legs of the marathon distance (42.195km) in the following order: male, female, male, female.

The leg distances are as follows: 11.45km, 10km, 10km, 10.745km.

Red cards are given for technical infringements, typically for bending the knee or not keeping one foot on the ground. If a team receives three red cards, they have to serve a three-minute penalty. There’s an additional one-minute penalty for every subsequent red card, while a team that receives seven red cards is disqualified.
