It is gold for the United States in the velodrome as they defeat New Zealand in the women's team pursuit, with gold medals for the team of Jennifer Valente, Lily Williams, Chloe Dygert and Kristen Faulkner.

As we have been saying, Great Britain won bronze earlier on with a win over Italy.

Well, by the end there was over two seconds between the two teams.

Team GB really put the afterburners on there in the final three laps.

I was a bit worried and I was hoping they had a plan in place to pick up the pace just like the men did and in fact that's exactly what they did.

Just got to stick to your plan and your process. We've had a lot of success in this event over the years, you would hope they have a wealth of knowledge to lean back on.

For them to rearrange the team and come here and win a bronze medal, I think they will actually be really pleased when they look back on it.

In the third heat, Jamaica's Orlando Bennett, with a personal best, and American Daniel Roberts booked their spot as the top two.

Hansle Parchment of Jamaica and Japan's Rachid Muratake will also take their place in Thursday's final, which is at 20:45 BST.

Next to the diving pool, where we’ve seen athletes throw themselves off a 10m platform and perform some incredible twists and somersaults, there is another pool…

This is the one where swimmers will be thrown by their team-mates up into the air to perform twists and somersaults in what is always a spectacular event – the acrobatic routine of the team competition in artistic swimming (18:30 BST)

This is the event that will decide the medals – the teams have already performed technical and free routines on two previous days.

China are top of the standings with 712.4455points, with the United States second (643.0255) and Spain third (633.6119).

Track cycling - women's team pursuit, gold race: USA v New Zealand

    Laura Kenny
Five time Olympic gold medal track and road cyclist on BBC TV

I think New Zealand are favourites for the gold medal race. They did not go full gas on their second ride because they knew that they already had a good buffer between themselves and the fourth placed team. I don't think that was them going as fast as they can.

    Sir Chris Hoy
Six-time Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

I am going to back America to take the gold, to be a bit different. They were a bit ragged in qualifying but they have some big names in there, Chloé Dygert, Kristen Faulkner after her road race victory, Jennifer Valente and Lily Williams.

If they get it right technically then it is going to be very close.

I am so, so happy for them.

Stick to your plan and that is what the British team did. They stuck to what they knew, didn't panic and brought home the bronze medal.

'Wonderful performance by both teams'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 7 August

What a wonderful performance there by both teams for different reasons.

Italy did not lay down, they were not careful. They went out to shake the British team.

On the other side of the track that is why you ride to a schedule. Britain knew what they were doing, only looking at Italy towards the very end.

Very well paced by Britain, courageous by Italy.

Italy's fast start does prove costly. At one point they led by 1.2 seconds over Great Britain, but the British quartet stayed calm and reeled the Italians back in.

GB took the lead late on and then held on to clinch the bronze medal. The quartet of Elinor Barker, Josie Knight, Anna Morris and Jessica Roberts get bronze in a time of 4:06.382, with Italy fourth in 4:08.961.
