Anyone else getting fatigued by these near misses and hair-breadth Silvers? Rowing, athletics, cycling, equestrian, triathlon and (especially) boxing - can't help but feel with a little bit more luck we could be on about 20 golds. I suppose that's the margins of truly elite sport - but my word it stings

Rowing, cycling, track and field - how many times is that we've been pipped to gold now? Brilliant from Hudson-Smith though

    Athletics - men's 400m final

Matt was just running his own race, he ran it perfectly and Quincy Hall almost came out of no where. And he finished so unbelievably strong.

It shows how cruel sport can really be, to be caught right at the line there.

Matt Hudson-Smith came into the bend exactly where he needed to be and at that point you thought there would not be any challengers. I thought Quincy Hall was really too far back even though he is a finisher.

The issue here for Matt is that he started to slow down dramatically [on the straight] - he is now really tired. The contrast is Quincy Hall has so much left from what he did not do on the curve.

Matthew Hudson-Smith did nothing wrong, Quincy Hall ran beautifully. He came like a steam train.

Silver medal, European record, brilliant time. These are not slow times.

I know Hudson-Smith will feel disappointed but I hope he will take heart from the fact that he worked it right to the line, he gave it everything he could.

It was a good race, it's just how it ended up today. What a result to go home with.

Four-time Olympic gold medallist athlete on BBC TV

Quincy Hall is such a finisher. He did the exact same thing at the US Olympic championships.

Look at the face, look at the strength. He is a closer. He is raw, not the best technique at the end of the race. But he does what he does.

Made the decision to switch from 400m hurdles to 400m flat last year and it has paid off.

    Athletics - men's 400m final

    Matt Hudson-Smith (GB) - 43.44 (European record)

Muzala Samukonga (Zam) - 43.74 (National record)

Matthew Hudson-Smith looks up at the screen and shouts with frustration but immediately goes over to Quincy Hall to say well done.

A European record by Hudson-Smith. In the dying few metres of that Olympic final, Hall pulled back Wolverhampton's finest and took the 20th gold medal for the USA in this event.

What a run from Hudson-Smith, he threw it all out there. He really did. Hold your head up high, you're an Olympic silver medallist.

We feel for Matt Hudson-Smith. It seemed like he did everything just right.

He was 100 per cent in the lead until 399 metres but all respect to Qunicy Hall. He never gave up. Just at the crucial moment he found the extra gear, that bit of charge.

Matthew Hudson-Smith had the lead coming into the home straight but it just wasn't meant to be for the GB athlete!

He takes home the silver medal, with American Quincy Hall ringing the winner's bell after surging through on Hudson-Smith in the final moments.

Muzala Samukonga of Zambia celebrates taking the bronze medal.

I don't think we will see Matt Hudson-Smith run any differently to what he has done already. He just needs to have the confidence to hit that top bend and hold his form heading into the closing stages. Kirani James really did look excellent.

Matthew Hudson-Smith is very hungry. His move to America from Birchfield was so key to humbling him a little bit, because he was a little cocky kid.

He has plied his trade over there, he has been protected and nurtured by his coach and the team. They have given him the confidence, tools and ability to be on this stage.
