    Men's 800m round one

    Paula Radcliffe
Former women's marathon world record holder on BBC TV

Clever, smart running. That's the second time a French athlete has been kept out by a British athlete, brilliant running from Max Burgin. Very, very clever and composed running from Max.

Burgin makes it throughpublished at 11:41 British Summer Time 7 August

    Men's 800m round one

All three Brits have made it through to the men's 800m semi-finals after Max Burgin finishes third in his heat.

Burgin found himself down in fifth and boxed in going into the final straight, but went on the outside and surged ahead of Mexico's Jesus Tonatiu and Uganda's Tom Dradriga.

France's Corentin le Clezio made a gallant attempt to pip Burgin on the line but it was not enough.

Spain's Mohamed Attaoui took the victory, with world indoor champion Bryce Hoppel recovering from a poor start to go through in second.

  3. What to watchpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 7 August

    BBC One

As soon as the athletics is done for the morning, BBC One will be dropping in on the dramatic spectacle that is the women's speed climbing, which is a bit like The Wall in Gladiators but without Diamond trying to pull your trainers off. No Britons involved - Poland's Aleksandra Miroslaw is the competitor to watch.

Then from around 12:25 BST, we're going to the Velodrome (or as our own Katie Falkingham described it in yesterday's live text, "the hottest place on Earth") to see Emma Finucane and Katy Marchant go for Great Britain in the first round of the track cycling women's keirin.

    Paula Radcliffe

Ben Pattison trusts himself, it's not just his speed, it's his maturity to not panic when he's not in that top three. Ben leaves it and leaves it and when he does strike, he does not panic, he holds.

What a finish from Ben Pattison!

He was fourth turning into the home straight but put on the afterburners and surged clear of South Africa's Edmund du Plessis, Wyclife Kinyamal of Kenya and France's Benjamin Robert to win the heat.

Du Plessis and Kinyamal join Pattison in the semi-finals, with Robert having to go again in the repechage.

    Sport climbing - women's speed

    Matthew Henry

    Climbing

I’ve arrived at the sport climbing venue in Le Bourget, northern Paris. The tunes are blaring - it’s like being in some hip nightclub - and this crowd is preparing itself for the women’s speed quarter-finals.

The format? Simple. Four head-to-heads. Fastest to the top in each goes through. The semi-finals and final follow afterwards all within half an hour.

I’ve just passed one of the athletes getting a forearm massage to prepare.

    Allison Curbishley
Former GB 400m runner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Beautiful from Elliot Giles, that is how you run a 800m.

He had no pressure, he only found out last week he was coming.

Giles has been working hard thinking that he would do some races at the end of the Diamond League circuit - now he has qualified for the semi-final in way which was really smooth.

Elliot Giles was called up as replacement for Team GB's injured Jake Wightman.

Elliot Giles ran extremely smartly there. It will be good for him, he's coming in a little bit fresh and is seizing that opportunity. He can say 'I'm here as well and I want to advance'.

Giles through to semispublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 7 August

Giles' GB team-mates Ben Pattison and Max Burgin are coming up in the next two heats.

  11. Rudisha's record under threat?published at 11:20 British Summer Time 7 August

    Men's 800m round one

    Harry Poole
    BBC Sport in Paris

Time for a first look at the man who could take down David Rudisha's 800m world record in Paris.

Kenya's Rudisha ran one minute 40.91 seconds to win Olympic gold at London 2012 and that mark has gone untouched since.

But in 2024 one man has been in hot pursuit. Algeria's Djamel Sedjati moved up to third on the all-time list by clocking 1:41.56 at the Paris Diamond League in early July and improved to 1:41.46 just five days later.

The 25-year-old stated after that performance that he will be aiming for Rudisha's record.

It's up to the rest to try and keep pace. Among them in this heat will be GB's Elliot Giles, who received a late call up following Jake Wightman's unfortunate injury.

Good to see everyone who fell progressing in that push and shove 5000m (advanced by the officials). Common sense prevails in this case I think. Anyway makes for a more action packed final.

"I reckon there were a few people looking around thinking 'who is this guy?'," admits Ben Pattison.

"Some of them had probably never even heard of me. Now I know they definitely have."

It is 12 months since Ben Pattison claimed a surprise bronze medal on his World Championship debut, in the first global final of his career.

And with that achievement, one it has taken a long time to sink in, the 22-year-old propelled himself from relative unknown to Olympic medal threat.

Nicknamed 'Fireball' by team-mate Matthew Hudson-Smith, Pattison once feared he might never run again after being diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening heart condition.

Becoming the first British man to win a world 800m medal since Peter Elliott in 1987, he will now hope to end a 40-year wait for a British men's 800m medallist at an Olympic Games.

More Brits on the trackpublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 7 August

    Men's 800m first round

The men's 800m heats have just begun with plenty of British interest.

Elliot Giles, who has replaced the injured Jake Wightman, is in heat four. In the next heat is Frimley flyer Ben Pattison, won world bronze last summer and jumped from 14th to second in the British all-time rankings with 1:42.27 in a lightning-quick 800m in Monaco last month.

Yorkshireman Max Burgin faces world indoor champion Bryce Hoppel and Slimane Moula in heat six.

It's been an eventful qualifying round for the men's high jump but defending champions Gianarco Tamberi and Mutaz Barshim are safely through.

Italian Tamberi, who was only released from hospital with kidney stones a few days ago, failed his three attempts at 2.27m but still finished in the top 12 to qualify (the qualifying height was 2.29m).

Qatar's Barshim pulled up sharply with a sore calf but still managed to clear 2.27m and also book his place in the final, which takes place on Saturday.

Job done for Jack Laugher and Jordan Houlden!

Laugher finished third with 467.05 points and Houlden finished fifth with 445.55 points to progress to Thursday's final.

China's Wang Zongyuan will take some beating, however - he toped the standings with a massive 537.85.

A lovely moment at the end, too, as Laugher gives a massive hug to Jamaica's Yona Wisdom-Knight, who finished an agonising 13th, with the top 12 progressing.
