Track cycling - men's team pursuit, gold race

Team GB's Charlie Tanfield speaking to BBC TV after winning silver in the men's team pursuit final: "Tokyo was a terrible experience, there is no other way around that for me. I felt as though I had to come here and do myself justice and I did that here.

"I am super proud of how far I have come over the years. I am really grateful to ride, it is not easy to get in the team let alone do a gold medal race.

"We put it all on the line tonight and we just fell short. We can be super proud of what we have done tonight"

The Wednesday night entertainment at the Stade de France is already up and running with the women's pole vault the sole focus of attention before the track events get under way shortly.

There is a huge French following in that corner of the stadium, all waving their flags proudly above their heads as two home athletes contest the final in Ninon Chapelle and Marie-Julie Bonnin.

Sadly there is no British interest here after neither Molly Caudery or Holly Bradshaw were able to qualify, but it should be a great competition nonetheless.

Team GB's Ethan Vernon speaking to BBC TV after winning silver in the men's team pursuit final: "It was completely different coming into this than it was in Tokyo. We knew we could do a good time here and be medal competitive.

"After qualifying it turns out that we were right in the game. It was a completely different run in and I was happy with how we came into it, and how we executed all of our rides.

"We had a target time to hit coming into the games and we hit it yesterday so we can't really ask for any more than that. We found our limit today."

Team GB's Oliver Wood [who rode in the earlier rounds but not in the gold medal race] speaking to BBC TV after winning silver in the men's team pursuit final: "I just stood there [in the middle of the track] shaking. Probably sweating more that these guys were.

"We did great rides to come here and to get where we are, and after Tokyo we were all hungry. The dream never died. We have come here and won a silver medal and these lads can all be proud because they did a great job. "

You see these guys, they perch right of the tip of their saddle when they are giving it 100% and if you do slide forward, it is very difficult to get back on.

Maybe the clip of wheel nudged him off and then he gets stuck.

He lost his balance for a few revolutions and that meant that he didn't have the ability to just throw his weight back and get back on the saddle.

Track cycling - men's team pursuit, gold race

Team GB's Daniel Bigham speaking to BBC TV after winning silver in the men's team pursuit final: "We rode the fastest ride we have ever done on every ride. We were in the best form and the best kit, and literally we all gave it everything.

"It was scrappy because you are on the limit. You are riding quicker than you have ever ridden before and as Ethan said we probably gave it that little bit too much. We are really leaning on him at the moment because he is anchoring the team and he has the legs to do it.

"At the end of the day Ethan is still human and it is on us to make sure we deliver him in that best place and we maybe gave him a bit too much work to do there.

On winning silver in front of his son: "Yes. He is just learning to stand up and he is looking over the barrier. It is pretty cool, pretty, pretty cool."

When you compete at such a high level, there is such a tiny margin between all of the athletes here, it can go one way, it can go the other way.

You have to move on from things that don't go quite right. They have still won a silver medal at the end of the day so it is like they have gone out of the competition in the first round and haven't been able to deliver a performance. They definitely have done an incredible job.

They'll just come back stronger. It will probably just give them more motivation to be more awesome next time. It was a real battle.

"Sorry to the guys but I think we gave everything and we can be proud of that silver medal."

On coming so close to gold: "We were super happy to win a silver medal but it was really there for the taking for us and we kind of knew that. We went out to get it but just came short in the end, so it's a shame."

It is another medal for Team GB so they will take confidence from it. But I think it will take a little bit of time for the lads to feel satisfied with that.

They were so hopeful and were going really well so they may feel a little disappointed.

Even on holding camp they were going very well. I think the Australians might have caught them by surprise.

That means there are 12 riders through into the next phase, with two of them - Turnbull and Jack Carlin - from Britain.

Congratulations to the Australian team. Olympic medals are very precious things.

They are hard won whether they are gold, whether they are silver, whether they are bronze.

There will be disappointment for Great Britain but eventually Ethan Hayter, Charlie Tanfield, Daniel Bigham and Ethan Vernon will console themselves with the fact they have an Olympic silver medal and it's just the what ifs.

A little touch of wheels from behind?published at 17:50 British Summer Time 7 August

Track cycling - men's team pursuit, gold race

    Sir Chris Hoy
Six-time Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

Initially you assume the saddle rail has broken or the seat has given way and he has just fallen forward. At the end of a race like that you inch forward in the saddle.

We did question if there was a little touch of wheels from behind? It looked like he touched it slightly maybe.

I think the reason Ethan [Hayter] did not get back in the saddle was the sheer amount of lactate in his muscles. Trying to lift himself back in the saddle at that point in the race is so tough.
