I am slightly confused more than anything because I don't think we have ever seen that happen before. I'm not sure what happened with the saddle.

Hayter did literally just slip off the front of it but he is not in a very comfortable position there so I don't see why he did not just sit back onto it.

Australia back at the top of the Olympic podium for the first time in 20 years. So much goes into this and you can see what it means. So near yet so far for Great Britain, but it wasn't meant to be. Britain take silver but it was nearly so much more. Classic Olympic track racing.

A fraction of a second, a blink of an eye, a small loss of concentration or balance.

Ethan Hayter has to accept it and move on. It will be difficult. This is the cruel side of entertainment being in sport but ultimately they gave it their best shot and the rest is out of your hands in some ways.

'So close for Great Britain'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 7 August

Track cycling - men's team pursuit, gold race

    Chris Boardman
Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

Team GB were two tenths adrift and Ethan Hayter just pulled himself off the front of the bike and his legs gave way. He was lucky not to crash.

That [race] is what you want to see, absolutely everything given. They weren't expected to win that one but they pushed the Australians all the way. That is the best they have ridden for the whole competition and they got so close.

Track cycling - men's team pursuit final

Australia held a narrow advantage throughout the race with only two tenths of a second in it with 625 metres to go, but an error from Ethan Hayter, nearly hitting the barrier late on, ends Great Britain's chances of clawing the deficit back.

The quartet of Hayter, Charlie Tanfield, Ethan Vernon and Daniel Bigham (along with Oliver Wood who didn't race in the final) have to settle for silvers.

    Gold for Australia.

No room for error now. Time taken on the third man. You have to watch your weakest rider, because the time is taken on that last man.

One mistake and everything changes. I think that is what it will take to split the teams, who makes a mistake first. If no one makes a mistake, then I think Australia will take it.

Team GB have nothing to lose. They are the marginal underdog here but they know the worst they can achieve is silver.

3.44 is a quick time from Italy. They rode beautifully, only slightly slower from their previous ride. Sometimes consistency is the only thing you need.

Denmark never fail to entertain but you never quite know what you are going to get from them. A world record or a complete explosion.
