Olympic champ Ulugbek Rashitov, who edged Bradly Sinden in the Tokyo final three years ago, has just made a dominant start to his gold medal defence.

He's beaten Hong Kong's Lo Wai Fung 2-0 but that doesn't quite tell the whole story - he was utterly dominant, winning the first round 12-0 and the second 9-2.

GB's Bradly Sinden will begin his bid for Olympic glory very shortly when he takes on Kevin Kassman in the men's -68kg.

You may remember Sinden won silver in Tokyo three years ago - but he had the gold medal within his grasp.

He had a 28-26 lead going into the final seconds but his opponent, Uzbekistan's Ulugbek Rashitov, timed his kicks to perfection to nab gold and leave Sinden with silver.

He's used that as motivation over the past three years - and it's worth remembering GB have never had a men's Olympic gold medallist in taekwondo...

A better dive in the second round has nudged her up into the qualification places in 10th.

Yasmin Harper is a place better off in ninth. So far so good from the Britons.

Right. Taekwondo. Here's how it works.

There's three rounds, all of which last two minutes. The scores are reset at the end of every round. Whoever wins two rounds winds.

There are two legal scoring areas - the body and the head, hence why the athletes wear what looks like huge padded coats around themselves.

Sensors is the head and body gear - and pleasingly, the socks - tot up the the kicks. Punches are scored by the judges.

The crucial one to remember: no hits below the waist.

A slight delay before the second heat because Germany's Sophie Weissenberg clips a hurdle in her warm-up and goes down.

Unfortunately, Weissenberg, who is ranked ninth in the world, is not going to be able to race. Terrible luck and her competition is over before it had even begun.

Heat two does eventually start and Netherlands' Emma Oosterwegel takes it in a season's best 13.41, just ahead of Germany's Carolin Schaeffer.

Defending champion Nafi Thiam of Belgium was fifth in 13.56.
