Both Georgia Bell and Laura Muir race in the first women's 1500m semi-final, and they come in with very different levels of experience.

While Muir is competing at her third Games, this is Bell's first after she only returned to running following the coronavirus pandemic.

Watching the Tokyo Olympics from the comfort of home, contemplating what might have been, Georgia Bell could not have foreseen the journey ahead.

It was only three years ago, around the time of the Tokyo Games, that she began to enjoy running again. By that point, her spikes had gone unused for four years.

But she is now a European silver medallist, despite still working full-time in cyber security, and secured her Olympic qualification in style by beating two-time global medallist Muir to the British 1500m title.

"When I quit after college it was just so clear I hadn’t reached my full potential and it wasn't a happy ending. There was something left but I thought it would always be that way," Bell told BBC Sport earlier this year.

Britain's Katy Marchant has spoken to BBC Radio 5 Live after finishing fourth in the women's keirin final and said: "It still feels really good you know. Monday was an absolutely spectacular day and a feeling that is going to live with me for a very long time.

"To bottle all that up and go race yesterday and today in the keirin making the final, it hurts but I can't be too disappointed."

Marchant then spoke about her son Arthur and added: "He's very special and close to my heart. It's been an absolute journey, in the last two years he has taught me so much and I've been able to take that into racing."

Jack Carlin had thought he was out, only for opponent Kaiya Ota to have one of his two victories taken from him for an infringement.

That set up a deciding race and Carlin takes full advantage. Once again the pair bump shoulders and have their elbows out, with Carlin, up out of his seat, sprinting home to the victory and potentially into the semi-finals, winning by 0.014 seconds.

However, the officials may be having a look at that one. Carlin will have an anxious wait to see if he is penalised. If he's not, he's in the semi-finals.

    Harry Poole
    BBC Sport in Paris

What a start it was from Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the opening morning of heptathlon action at Paris 2024.

The two-time world champion tops the standings after two events, ahead of anticipated gold medal rivals Nafi Thiam and Anna Hall.

But can she remain as leader over night?

First up this evening is the shot put, which is one of the 31-year-old's weaker events.

Johnson-Thompson's personal best in that discipline is 13.92m, significantly down on Thiam's 15.54m, while Hall has also thrown 14.80m.

However, the fourth and final event of day one will be the 200m, in which the Briton has run faster than both.

With just 33 points separating the top three, this could be very, very close...

Scotland's Muir, who is ranked fourth in the world, sailed through her heat on Tuesday, finishing second in a time of three minutes 58.91 seconds.

The 31-year-old is hoping to upgrade her Tokyo 2020 silver to Paris gold medal and she told BBC Sport Scotland she is feeling "really, really relaxed" ahead of tonight's semi-final.

"I have never been in this position before as a reigning Olympic medallist," said Muir. "I have nothing to lose so if I can just enjoy it and stay relaxed, I know I can run fast."

To do it again in the final I feel like she didn't necessarily learn from that.

Darting between Paris metro stations in Olympics rush hour can actually be quite fun.

Mainly because you’re trying to work out which Games venue everyone is piling out of/heading towards when you’re rushing past them in myriad underground walkways.

What sport is going on near here? What have I missed? Can I dash upstairs and find something to watch?

Earlier I spotted a group of French fans, all dressed in berets and wearing Tricolore face paint, on a train just east of central Paris.

I had the same thoughts as usual.

Turns out they were on the way to Bercy to watch France versus Germany in the men’s basketball semi-finals.
