Sky Brown races over to embrace Lola Tambling at the end of an fine opening run.

She almost goes down twice but shows her guts to stay afloat and nudge herself up to 73 points.

That puts her in the top eight for now - and is a great platform to build from.

With the women's park qualifying having a very young field of athletes, how old you have to be to take part at the Olympics?

The ruling from the IOC, states: "There is no specific age limit for taking part in the Olympic Games. This depends on each International Sports Federation and the rules it lays down for its sport."

    Skateboarding - women's park prelims

If you remember watching in Tokyo, you may be wondering why the scoring seems so much higher now.

That is because the system for each trick has changed, being marked from 0 to 100 now instead of 0 to 10.

In 2021, Sky Brown won bronze with a highest score of 56.47. This year, she would not get anywhere near qualifying with that.

What are the rules and scoring in park skateboarding?published at 13:14 British Summer Time 6 August

General view of La Concorde in ParisImage source, Getty Images

Park skateboarding takes place on a course - like those seen at local skate parks - with ramps, bends and ridges.

The skaters are split into four heats of five or six skaters, as determined by a random draw. They each perform three 45-second runs. Everyone does a first run in turn, then a second etc.

The top eight scorers overall progress to the final, where they repeat the process.

In the event of a tie, the skater with the higher score from their second-best run wins. If still tied the judges vote electronically on who should be ranked first. The head judge breaks a tie in the final results and rankings.

She might not be 100% but Sky Brown is still full of the bouncy confidence that so endeared her to the British public when she won bronze at Tokyo.

Speaking to Newsround, she described her dislocated shoulder injury as "scary" and said that she'll wear a brace while skating but accepted that injury is part of being an Olympic athlete.

"There is this side of it too - [you] can’t let some fall or pain stop you from what you want to do," she said.

"I am strong and I believe in myself and I hope it inspires."

I predicted earlier that scoring over 80 points might be enough to make the final. So far, four have made it into that hallowed ground.

These next four will be looking nervously over their shoulders as Sky Brown, Lola Tambling and company get going shortly:

    • 5th: Sakura Yosozumi - 79.70
    • 6th: Raicca Ventura - 76.24
    • 7th: Lily Stoephasius - 74.40
