No automatic semi-final spot for GB's Revee Walcott-Nolan, who finishes eighth to go into the repechage.

Walcott-Nolan struggled to break free of a tightly-packed field that only really spread out on the final bend and could not catch up with the leaders on the home straight.

Kenya's Nelly Chepchirchir won in a time of 4:02.67, with Australia’s Jessica Hull also among the qualifiers.

Team GB's 800m runner Georgia Bell, speaking to the BBC after qualifying for the semi-final: "The comeback season continues.

"That was good fun and the job was to progress to the next round. Anything can happen in the heats and being a bit aggressive early on to stay out of trouble is what I wanted to do.

"I didn't want to run any wider than I had to and soon as you give someone an inch mentally it might knock you - I am happy with how it went.

"I felt like a kid on Christmas morning, and I couldn't sleep much last night but that's partly because of my team-mate Keely [Hodgkinson]!"

That was brilliant, Christian Kukuk ran with so much pace and energy, so much better than yesterday. I love the way he cleared that final fence, a brilliant piece of riding. That was clever and a very, very convincing round. There was a touch on five but no one is going to easily clear that.

Triathlon has to be up there - it's so exciting. You've got time to really get invested and there are never any guarantees. Even up to the last few hundred metres as we saw with Alex Yee.
